The saga begins...

This letter went out to three manufacturers thus far, Canal Street Cutlery, GEC, and Queen:

I am writing you on behalf of Bladeforums Traditional sub-forum. Every year for the past 5 years, we have commissioned a traditionally patterned slipjoint knife from an American manufacturer.

This year we would like the following, in a quantity between 50 and 75 pieces:
1. Barlow pattern slipjoint knife, closed OAL between 3 5/8" and 4".

2. Blades to be made of carbon steel of your choice, premium stainless or D2, provide pricing as to options.

3. 2 blades, equal or close length, spear or clip main blade, wharncliffe 2nd blade, long pull or preferably long match striker pull.

4. If we can get nickel silver liners that would be superb.

5. Bone of maker's choice or stag if possible(would like price breakdown on both)

6. Stamped bolster to read either: "BladeForums 2009" or "BFC 2009"

Please tender pricing and what the lag time will be after approval of design, we are hoping for delivery no later than November 2009. 50% of final cost for deposit is acceptable.

Please advise if you are interested.

Best Regards,

Steven Garsson

This is GEC's position as presented this morning by Christine Tucker in the Sales Department(only company to respond so far):

....brass liners only, barlow is only 3" closed, would not be able to stamp bolsters, engrave BFC on one line, 2009 on second line ONLY.

They don't have a large barlow, suggested other patterns, including large trapper or Moose.....AND they don't currently do a Swayback.

Best Regards,

Steven Garsson

Me "personally" not to interested in the GEC offering(too short:grumpy:) SOOOO wait and see what the other 2 CO.s have to say.

:thumbup:And by the way thanks for the work on this project and the letter appears to be short and to the point!!

Steven,

First, let me express my gratitude on your rapid response in corresponding with perspective manufacturers so quickly after the pattern vote. Also, I thought the letter was well articulated in detailing the parameters of the needs of this project.

A question please if I may. Are there plans to reach out to additional American cutlery manufacturers other than the three you have mentioned?

Anthony, thanks for the response.

These manufacturers represent our 1st preference, we are not sure where else to look, what suggestions do you have for us to try?

Thanks for all the work Steven.
Comments;
>I think the GEC Barlow is too short.
>Question; why BFC, and not BF for the signature bolster?
>Suggestions; BF over 09 would be easier for a company to achieve. Or just BF (with an arrow under or through it?)
Also, if engraving is our only option, can they do it deep and bold??
It always gets down to the small details . . . . .

Thanks Steven.
Folks, he has been hard at work behind the scenes on this.

The saga begins...
Just wanted to add my thanks, too, Steven!

I agree with the majority opinion that the knife suggested by GEC is smaller than I would prefer. I would be willing to go with it if no other maker stepped up with a larger offering, but it would not be my first choice.

Steven,

I was thinking of Amherst Cutlery. Pappy was initially making production model slipjoints and then went to customs pretty quickly thereafter. And currently I believe he is building only custom slipjoints exclusively.. However, perhaps he would consider one more run of production quality Barlow's with our specifications regarding the 50-75 quantity we seek.. I don't know if this is do-able economically considering our budget, but I figure it may just be worth asking him. The worst thing that could happen is he would say 'no'.. But, if he does agree, I'd wager it would be one fine Barlow he'd build for us in here. :)

Thanks for your consideration.

Anthony

ps{I have others in mind as well}

Anthony, please read this thread, and then tell me if you would be comfortable tying up $3,000 or so of deposit money from fellow Forumites:

Gus and Steven,
Much appreciated for all the work your putting in to see the project completed. I have to concur with my forumites, the GEC response is too short. Looking forward to hearing from the other manufacturers.

Man, I had NO idea.. Now I'm obviously very sorry I brought it up!. Last I heard, folksy forum folks in here including the moderators were touting his knives and his character. I guess I am a little behind the 8 ball when it comes to keeping up with the latest trades and member's reputation in the Good, Bad & Ugly forum. Thanks very kindly for setting me straight.. I recon I'll do a search first next time before I go making any more suggestions.

Look Anthony...Gus and I take this responsibility very seriously....I am a Sales Account manager at a sporting goods manufacturer...it is all in the details...we didn't ask you to provide the CV on companies you suggest, that is our job.

Amherst looks great on the surface, they make excellent knives, from what I have seen...but we are not talking about my money...keep the suggestions coming, and WE will do the dirt digging....it was a good suggestion, fwiw, that post I directed you to just surfaced on this past SATURDAY...two days ago....lighten up on yourself.:)

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Thanks Steven, as always I appreciate everything you guys do in puttin' together a forum knife, I've been here for the '06; '07 and '08, I even have the Schrade Lost Souls of '05, so suffice it to say I'm in whatever the choice.

I like the idea of the BF with the arrow through it for the bolster, a quick question, is this the official thread for the '09 knife info for now, I just like to make sure so I don't miss anything, maybe we can get this stickied till the next post comes for people to commit "to this thing of ours";), (sorry, just saw The Godfather:)).

Copy That :D.. And Thanks. I am headed out the door to meet with some friends for lunch. So I believe I will be lightening up PDQ ;) :p

Seeing what is going on neither Steven nor I am comfortable with going with upstarts on this project.

As far as a sticky. This thread is just to inform and we will bring it back up as we get more information. Once we get a bid we like and a price, we will have a sticky for sign up, but I do not see a need to stick this thread. (although their might be a few other less comfortable thoughts with the same term. ;)).

Those are 3 great choices Steven......a shame about GEC.
Thank you to you and Gus for all your efforts on our behalf bud:thumbup::)

Hi Steven,

We received your request for a quotation on a Barlow, and unfortunately we do not manufacture a Barlow. Patterns that we produce are trappers, stockman, muskrat, cannittler, sleeve board ring opener, 5 ¼’ folding hunter, congress and four rigid blade hunting knives. We try to add a pattern or two every year maybe next year a Barlow.

Thanks for your interest in Canal Street Cutlery.

Regards,

Wally Gardiner

Two down, 1 to go.

Thanks very much for all your hard work fellas. I can't wait to see and who makes the knife!! Hey I'm excited.
