BladeForums Traditional 2009 Knife Cover Letter.....

The first vote was for the pattern. Like past years once we get the pattern down the rest is left to the organizers and the company who makes the knife.

As with any club type knife, some folks are going to like the knife and buy it, some are going to buy no matter what because of friendships and relationships in the club, others are going to not buy because they do not like the knife. (All of the above are good and valid reasons as far as I am concerned.)

There is no way we are going to make everyone happy with the choice. This is the 4th year, we have not seen a wharncliff blade yet. A long clip type and a wharnie offers two distinct blade shapes and versatile cutter. The actual blade types will be most likely determined by the maker.

Anyway, that is the story and for now Steven and I are "stickin' to it". :)

Yes, and I am sticking with you!

Great way of explaining.
And I fully support what you are doing.

Thanks for the work and taking on the deciding!

I want to express a big thank you for working this!

I agree that a revisit of the pattern might be necessary.

I like the idea of a smaller single blade Barlow but I also understand how this might dissuade people from buying one.

We really are not trying to put our personal favorites ahead on the group's. (If I had my way it would have been a sunfish ;)). I personally prefer small knives for carry 5 days a week in the office.

We have had 2 small knives and a medium sized Canoe. Looking at the big picture we are due for a bigger knife this year just for the sake of variety. I have carried and used all of the BFC knives, but some folks are putting them up. Variety is a good thing when it fits. The guys putting them behind glass with the other BFC knives get some variety in their collection and the guys who are going to use them, get a little bigger knife that can be put to tougher work in some cases.

I hope as years go by that we always consider variety in this little tradition we have going.

As far as Steven and I getting along. That is not an issue. There is brotherhood and respect between us. I respect him as a person as well as respecting his taste in knives. We could even argue and or cuss each other out and still walk away as brothers. (I think I can bet on that one.)

I don't believe that anyone could accuse you of putting your favorites ahead of the groups!

My comment was in regard to the fact if the Barlow pattern is rejected by Queen that perhaps a new poll is required to determine a new pattern.

 you betcha!:D

Gus, I'll go for the Sunfish, too. Or a two-blade folding hunter for that matter. That would give us something bigger for sure. :D

I am going to buy the knife no matter what the outcome. It is a sentermental thing for me. I love this place. After voting for Barlow, I now have fallen in love with swayback jack. I am such a slippie trollop.

The effort being put forth on our behalf is very much appreciated. Thank you.

I'm still waiting on the final decision before throwing a firm commitment in, but things are looking up. <cough> I wanted a sway back </cough> :)

The hunt is on! Excitement in every response! Anyway, I've probably missed a reason why - and please correct me! But doesn't Schatt & Morgan make a beauty of a Barlow? Or are they in reality made by Queen or...?

Nukemkb,

Yes Schatt & Morgan makes a nice 3.5 inch barlow. That size plus the variety of blades they offer would make for a nice forum knife imo. :)

Hey, I agree, but I just might have to have a buddy who lives in Bethlehem make a visit to Titusville in order to get someone to respond to us.

um... I notice that AG has a nice Barlow with 1095 blades. It is a bit smaller than you were looking for but it was at least bigger than 3". He lists it as 3 5/16" closed.

Perhaps he would be willing to order up a special lot with different scales and the BFC imprint??

I saw it two days ago....it is made in Germany.....pretty sure this would booger us up pretty good. We are pretty committed to the long wharnie blade if we can get it....hope not lost yet.

STeven Garsson

I think that AG Russell barlow might be made by boker in Germany.

STeven beat me to the punch.

Keep up the good work guys!

If the Barlow falls through, how did a Trapper design fair in the original voting?
2 equal length blades.
I would think one being a Wharncliffe shouldn't be a probem.
Most makers offer at least one between 3.5 and just over 4".
Has it been done before as a forum knife?

A serpentine jack was the #3 in voting, with 19 votes. It is a popular pattern, and produced by all of the companies...but it is also similar to last year's knife, just bigger.

A Trapper is an idea, but let's exhaust all possible avenues first, before we go messing about...if we get the order in by the end of April, it gives the manufacturer OVER 6 months to produce it for us, in order to meet the deadline.

This may get a bit spendy.....You will be kept posted as the information comes in....we will probably need to order 100 knives.

Anything with a Wharncliffe blade broadens the appeal in my view.

Teardop Jack with short Wharncliffe......

Whatever, I'm sure a candidate will emerge that we can enthuse over!

We gots more work to do if we need a 100.

I think we could do it, but we may need help to spread the word around the forum.

I know Gus and Steven through here, that's about it, but both are good guys. This thread exemplifies that. The level of dedication for this, I will look at participating next year.
