Bladeforums under attack?

This thread should not have been moved. It was a general PSA that members should be aware of.

Hiding the problem won’t make it go away. Educating members about the issue and take precautions is a better measure than hiding it in the scarcely visited tech forum.

How is this happening? Does BF have a plan?

Apparently not (yet).

But you can go to the parallel thread on this topic to see my (and some other) suggestions on this topic, here:

It absolutely should have been moved, simply because this is where it belongs and other relevant threads are here too.

As far as hiding a problem I take offense to that as I’m the one that dealt with the majority of this and helped restore the accounts to the owners.

I appreciate your efforts but you are playing from behind. Steps should be taken to inform users of the problem and how to prevent it from occurring again.

It doesn’t need to be my psa, but some messaging should be made. It is not an unreasonable request.

Change your password. Especially if you have used the password for a long time or across multiple platforms.

And use 2FA which is about as much "security" as is currently available to protect any online account these days. I use a 2FA app as well as email or txt msging for 2FA authentication for various accounts.

It's not difficult to set up on BF (or anywhere else) and if you're "sophisticated" enough to use a computer/phone to log into this site, you can easily figure out how to set up 2FA in order to log in.

I did it and I'm 70 F. . .ing years old! LOL! ;)

BTW, I used a password manager/generator for awhile but I didn't like it, didn't trust it and don't use it any more.

However, I do vary the passwords that I use and only use a UNIQUE password (that I can actually remember) for financial and other accounts, where financial transactions can occur and activate 2FA for those accts whenever available.

I also store all of my passwords in my gun safe where I can find them when needed (and where my executor can find/use them after I die).

I can understand why it was moved, if it was originally posted in the General Discussion Forum, but I also think that a public service sticky should be posted (at least temporarily) at the top of each page to notify everyone of this problem and what people should do to protect their accounts.

The only thing that clued me in was seeing the words "Hacked Account" appearing on various ads in the Exchange BUT not everyone uses the Exchange and those people might otherwise know about this problem unless such notice is provided.

The problem of online security is not only here on BladeForums but everywhere,be proactive as best as you can.
The efforts to stop these attacks are a full time job here just goes to show how down right nasty some of our fellow human beings are.
One example just click on the members link, then click on banned members. It looks like a neverending list of bad actors.
Somebody has to deal with each one of these. Not fun.

Messaging has been made to inform users, several times with recommendations on how to prevent this.

I banned a hacked account this morning, searched the posts and made announcements in the numerous for sale threads, also deleted the profile posts that were left.

Shortly after my announcement that the account was hacked a member posted the following in one of the for sale threads.
I have no idea what these people are talking about. I'll be at work until my lunch, when I'm free to hit you back and pay for the knife. What's wrong with these people?
Please email me at:
Removed
And I'll be in touch around one pm my time.
Best regards,

I got a two factor notification that someone tried to log in to my account about an hour ago. I went ahead and changed my password to be sure, but it seems like people are definitely trying to play games.
Out of curiosity, was it a Romanian IP?

I, and I'm sure my fellow mods, have been deleting tons of highly questionable attempts to register on the site.

Been extremely heavy this past week, even in comparison to the higher work flow that has become the new normal in that regard.

I didn't think to check until just now, but no, it wasn't. It actually looks like I probably accidentally clicked a link on my phone to take me elsewhere on the site and didn't realize it asked me to log in again, so that one was pure user error. 😵‍💫
That happens to me too sometimes where I get the email even just going to a regular page with no additional login requested/expected/required. Definitely got my attention the first time or two it happened.
