In a few days I depart for a trip that his been of interest to me since I was a boy and read Teddy Roosevelt's tales of exploring the wilds of Brasil and the Amazon River

I have been fortunate enough to have been able to spend many a night and day in some of the worlds great wild places.

From the Selous Reserve in Tanzania to the Roof Top of the world the great Pamir Mountains I have seen my share of great wildernesses, jungles, mountains , oceans and rivers but the Amazon Basin has eluded me until now

So finally armed with some fishing gear Fly , Spin and casting and my trusty recurve bow set up to fish and shoot on land I will venture from Philadelphia to Miami and there I will board a plane to Manaus South America

There I will than board a small float plane that will whisk me down the Amazon to a drop off point where I will catch a boat that will take me on the rest of my journey

I will be staying on the boat and everyday moving deeper down the Amazon exploring and fishing and shooting my way down the great Amazon River

I have just downloaded the book River Of Doubt which documents TR's adventures of the Amazon a trip that he never really recovered from. So that will be my reading material for the trip.

As for the topic of this thread the cutlery I've chosen and why

First off machetes are plentiful in South America and I have been told I will have access to the boats stock

So what I am bringing will be my own personal cutlery that I will be carrying and using on this trip

My selection would have been slightly different if I were not sleeping on a boat like in the movie Anaconda :) and or camping

If I were sleeping in the jungle I would have brought a larger Bowie/Camp style piece but since machetes are covered my choices are as follows

The blade that will grace my side as soon as I land in Manaus will be my DISKIN USA FIRE

This piece has a DLC coated Elmax blade that should serve me well in a horizontal belt pouch

That the knife is quick on the opening side is a huge plus.

The Fire I have a lot of experience with and it is simply put an awesome DA Auto

As soon as I get to the float plane I will switch to one of my favorite knives

This knife will be used primarily as my heavy duty user

It will be the knife I have on my belt while Bowfishing with my recurve

When you are using heavy gator line for Bowfishing a quick to get into play fixed Blade is the only way to go

Large strong fish do not like arrows stuck in them and if you get wrapped by accident in the line you will quickly learn what a world of hurt is.

Being miles away from help, also adds a certain pucker factor to it :)

This knife will also serve as my main personal protection piece being that you can not bring in firearms

The fixed Blade will also serve as a survival knife if need be if the float plane or boat goes down

So it needs to be up for any tasks

To big of a knife becomes cumbersome to wear while you are fishing etc

So in other words I want to pack a big little knife

There is no knife in my collection that exemplifies this as well as Sam Lurquins Hurak design

With its large full grip and its Maragin steel blade this piece fills my needs in spades

The black Micarta grip fills the hands and the contours keep it planted

The edge is convexEd to give it strength so even if it is abused it will not chip out

This one is in one of Jeremy's horizontal sheaths which is one of my favorite ways to carry this size blade

When I hunt and fish I wear some what of a utility belt. Like any carpenter , cop or Batman would :)

It's an over belt that has the things I need on it

When hunting it depends on wether I am Bowhunting or rifle hunting but it is usually some thing like this

A cartridge holder , range finder , leatherman , sheath knife , flash light etc

When fishing it is a bit different but two staples are my Van Staal Titanium Pliers and my AG Russell Seamaster

The marlin Spike is fantastic when working on a boat with ropes etc.

The knife is almost impervious to corrosion and both the pliers and the Seamaster are on tethers so I don't loose them in the drink

When Bowfishing I will add the Hurak to my belt

The kit I have selected is what I feel will give me what I need in almost any situation I come by

Again if machetes were not provided and I was spending more time in the jungle instead of on the water my choice would be slightly different

I will be shooting some video of the fishing and Bowfishing along with knife use

Thanks for looking see ya all soon

Great post Joe. I like the pictures, descriptions and explanations to go along with the knives you chose.

That sounds like quite an adventure. Safe travels, my friend!

You are indeed a fortunate man. Received my new issue of Sporting Classics. I see an add for safari outfitters featuring a familiar face with a Marco Polo sheep. You or?

All bases covered. That's truly a dream trip Joe, best of luck & be safe, can't wait for your stories when you get back. Slightly surprised you aren't taking the Lurquin Fighter you have the shoulder rig for.

Joe,

It sounds like you have really planned for a great trip.

Hopefully you have had any recommended vaccinations, since you mentioned Teddy Roosevelt.

I'm looking forward to seeing the photos of your trip.

Have a super and safe time.

Jim

Joe: Good read on your trip - wish I was 20 years younger!

A grand adventure!

That fish-lip grabber is a good idea, as you're sure to mess with some strange jungle fish that could have nasty spines and teeth. Watch out for electric eels!:D

Have a safe trip Brother looking forward to seeing the pictures of your great adventure when you return!

On a darker land 'ol Capstick would have been proud. Your take on it all exceeds any of the gear. Anyone can tell you live the part as a true gentleman. Looking forward to reading on and someday your journal. Amazing / Amazon

Have a great adventure, and a safe one too!

Anxious to hear all about it!
