Blades for Christmas

'Tis the season. A few questions and requests for recommendations for anybody who might know or have an opinion.

First: I've been thinking about getting my brother-in-law a Kershaw Leek for Christmas, and they've got them on Amazon for what looks to be a pretty reasonable price. However, the description of the Leek on Amazon says that it's 440A steel. As near as I can tell from other websurfing, nowadays Leeks are no longer 440A, but Sandvik. So is Amazon just working off an old description/specification, or do you think they somehow have a stash of the 440A Leeks? (Which might account for the reasonable price. Hmm.)

Followup question/recommendation: Or, since I'd much rather support somebody who's actually committed to their products, and not a corporate behemoth anyway, can somebody recommend an internet outlet for knives and such with good service and competitive prices? Or a good retail outlet in the SF Bay Area?

Second: My sister said she would also look favorably upon getting a knife for Christmas, though I'm quite sure she's looking not for a simple single blade, but for something multitoolish to replace the Swiss Army that she recently lost. Any recommendations for something useful, of good quality, slightly upscale from a $15 Victorinox, and appropriately femme to fit into a small or medium purse?

Thanks in advance for all ideas.

I like the G10 S30V leek.

+1 on the Victorinox cadet. Saw some at Target and they look really nice. blade, bottle opener, can opener, nail file, all in a small, slim package. Target had them for 17.99 in red, green, or silver alox.

I recommend something that says "Golden Colorado, USA, Earth" on the blade.

Another +1. I just decided to go along with the leek so that the Kershaw Mafia wouldn't order a hit on me :), But since someone else suggested it first... Go Spyderco!

for christmas im getting my father a SOG contractor 2x4, my grandfather a vintage bone-scale swiss army style knife, my best friend a harley davidson/benchmade levitator in the reverse tanto bladeshape and for the rest of the family classic benchmites

look at some of the SOG Fusion series for good gift knives as well as some benchmade benchmites (im getting each one engraved with the person whos receiving its name)

Okay, I'm open to that. (I admit that possibly I'm projecting since I'd sorta like to have a composite Leek myself.) What would you recommend as a comparable kind of EDC or all-purpose knife from Spyderco? A Delica, maybe?

Compared to a Leek, I'd say the closest matches from spyderco would either be a Centofante III (if you like a more traditional style blade) http://www.newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=3830 or Centofante IV (If you like wharncliff) http://www.newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=5179. The leek is more of a wharncliff blade. The blade size of the centofantes are about the same length, and the blades are also thin like the leek. Other than those... yea I'd go Delica http://www.newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=4903. (smaller blade, but thicker). Of course none of these spydercos are assisted opening like the Leek, but after a while, you get over the assisted fad.

Thanks, Jake, for the suggestions. And to all others as well.

Why not an Alox Farmer? It's useful and not too bulky. You could go for a Victorinox multi-tool but that would weigh her bag down too much....How about an old-school slip joint? Scout knife could work or a CASE Stockmann, nice bone handles etc.
