I've been a knife maker for a couple years now
it's always a learning experience. Is it necessary
to hold a mastersmith title if one wanted to pursue
a well established name for themselves? If so then
where and how would one go about getting a cert?
I'm aware of ABS and some other courses that they offer
but I live in b.f.e Oklahoma and I'm not aware of
any place close to start. Mr. Moran, Mr Goddard and other well
known makers started somewhere. any suggestions ?

I think Mike Williams lives near you in BFE OK. He is a ABS Mastersmith.

Well Mike is in Broken Bow. Ray kirk is in Tahlequah. Jerry Lairson is in Ringold. I am in Norman. Greg Shahan a very talented soon to be journeyman is in Woodward. We are kind of spaced out across the state. I am sure we would be willing to talk to you about knifemaking and the ABS. We also have the KGA, Oklahoma knifemakers and collectors organization, www. KGA.com. Also check out the ABS website.
I would suggest attending a hammer in, such as the Spring Hammer In coming up in April at Old Washington state park in southwest Arkansas. There will also be a shop tour for the KGA in the spring, usually in Tahlequah. And yes you do not have to be a MS to make a name for yourself, just have to make good knives and get your name out there. The ABS rating does help though.

Karl, I have been through there, lol.

Sirmasta,

If you ever get to Woodward give a shout.

Greg

Just give me a call or an e-mail. I was going to say the ones that cut. Right now it has been bowies and hunters, with a few fighters thrown in. Every now and then something for fun and different. I also like trying challenging things like a main gauche or other historical pieces. The link for the KGA is www.theknifegroup.com, sorry about that.

Your knives are getting good Greg. Keep it up, and how are the five coming?
