bladesmith services being offered?

two questions i'm wondering:

I don't often see bladesmith services being offered on the forum, wonder why that is?

second, if anyone is offering services such as re-handling knives, does anyone take trades as payments?

I'm asking because I have a cold steel carbon trailmaster that needs a new guard and handle. I had requested a quote from a shop, but school tuition came due and I had to drop it. I do, however, have a nearly new surefire A2 that is just sitting around. the MSRP on the surefire is close to what I was quoted for the re-fitting of the trailmaster.

so just wondering if any bladesmith out there offers their service and will take trades in lieu of payment.

always welcome any pointers if anyone knows of such a shop. I live in an apt so a sander is out of the question which means it's nearly impossible for me to do it myself.

thanks for reading my rambling.

david.

David, where do you live???? I have Hammer-Ins at my shop 3 to 4 times a year and on Saturdays I have people over, learning how to make Damascus and knives.:D

There are many here who perform customization work. One reason you don't see many advertising for it is that it requires a paying membership to advertise.

The main reason, however, is that this board's atmosphere has long been one of sharing ideas and information more so than advertising one's services. It's a great place to soak up a wealth of information for expanding your knowledge on bladecraft, and it's a great place to meet new makers.

I think the best way to find someone to help you out is to do exactly what you just did. Make a post and pose your question. You'll surely find some excellent help.

george, I'm in So Cal. los angeles, about 3000 miles away. I wish I knew where in Cali there is something like that. I'm decent at modifying a flashlight or two, but when it comes to sanding and shaping, I gotta recall some of the woodshop days from high school.

What kind of handle are you looking to replace it with? If he's not offering, I'll do it for you.

It's kind of bad form to post around advertising. So much so that in a few of my regular haunts I avoid responding to threads about "where do I get a $150 bushcrafter?" unless someone brings me up and I have factual stuff to input.

Many to most of us have websites in our siglines, and we all eagerly check our email.

the signature thing would explain why I'm having difficulty. My preference on the forum is set to hide all signature....oops.

Well, since he's looking to do a trade, I don't think he was out of line. Some folks might consider it rude to get a phone call saying "I like your work, but I don't have any money right now...". The A2 was a fair offer, not putting it down, but I can imagine that he might feel odd asking someone he doesn't know like that.

I think asking around here if folks do trades for work was appropriate.

Oh, he's not out of line at all! I was just answering part of the question with some personal notes :)

I should have said- one reason you don't see a ton of advertising is that it's sometiems considered bad form for *knifemakers* to make an advertisment out of posting.

Sorry misunderstood the nature of the post. I agree that it could be considered bad form for makers to try and solicit in this section.
