Looking online there seems to be few bladesmithing schools.
Does anyone have some recommendations on schools that they have attended or have heard of through rumor, perhaps on this forum?
Such as Texarkana College, which is 30-35 minutes NE of me & New England School of Metalwork?
I am always traveling to D.C. so if there is something in that area or of Northern VA.
Neverminding my location, any schools or courses you would recommend?
All answers greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Something like Texarkana College Bladesmithing School & New England School of Metalworks bladesmithing course...
The distance is irrelevant as of right now, considering it is in the states.
All answers are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I posted a similar forum in the General section of the knife forum, figured this might narrow it down abit. Sorry, and thanks.

If you don't have an experienced 'Smith in your area willing to take you under their wing then the Texarkana 2 week school would be hard to beat, IMHO, or the New England bunch....all 1st Rate.

I have spent a fair amount of time at classes and hammer ins at the New England School of Metalwork. It is 100% first rate school, shop and teachers.

Take a look at the ABS (American Bladesmith Society). Plenty of resources, schools, hammer-ins and such.

And if you ever drive through my neck of the woods on the way to NoVA we can fire up the forge or visit with my local resources...

I went to the Texarkana Damascus class (Washington Arkansas) in 1990 under Charles Ochs. The second day of class we were all making Damascus. Great experience. I would suggest you don't go in August. Hot and humid.

If I lived 30-35 minutes from The Moran School of Bladesmithing, I would definitively take every class I could afford. If you can schedule it, start with the introduction to knifemaking class this April. It has the spring Hammer-in right in the middle of it. You will meet more great smiths and legends during that 12 days than you may even meet in one place again.

Thank everyone for your recommendations! Great advice from everyone! Thanks again

Mr. Lewis I'm born and raised Texas humidity and served in the Marine Corps. (Paris Island, SC) I can handle the heat ;) However I can see how it can get much hotter in a forge or small heated shop. Thnk you for the advice!

LucyCustomKnives I will be in Fairfax, Va in two weeks might have to take you up on that if you're available. Kinda give me an idea of everything...

Thanks again everyone!

Hi Kavanagh
Both Texarkana College & the New England School of Metalwork are excellent schools! I agree with Bladsmith, if you have one of these schools in your backyard, you really need to look no further.

About 2 years ago, Blade Magazine ran an article called "Schools of Sharper Learning" http://www.blademag.com/blog/schools-of-sharper-learning that you may want to look at when you travel. The article lists several knifemakers offering classes and hammer-ins across the country. Sorry, I do try to avoid using this fine forum for self promotion, but the article does mention the knifemaking courses offered at my shop as well.

All the best
