Here are a couple of scans of something nice that Spyderco doesn't make any more . . . The Pro Venator with the silver wolf handle overlay designed by master engraver Gary Blanchard. Sometimes things like this emerge from storage. Enjoy.

Great looking knife James! Didn't see it listed on your website tho. Does it have a pricetag?

Also, when I originally shopped and bought my Wegner Jr (ultimately from you), I remember being confused at the shops by the similarities between the Pro-Venator and Wegner Jr. Do you know which one came first? One is a lockback and the other a locking liner, but they share similar skinner blade profiles (unless this shape is somehow generic to the industry).

Technology's the answer, what's the question?

The Venator came first.I have a brochure with this knife and other 's engraved by Blanchard and they are well over 5 yrs old.

the Pro-Venator C13 came out in 1991. It is now called the Pro-Grip along with it's lite weight version.

So, anyone... where did the name "Provenator" (or "Pro-Venator") come from? Is it named after someone? Pro-Ventilator maybe I could understand...

OD - Latin for "hunter". Originally called "Pro-Hunter". Imperial Schrade informed us that they were using and had registered that name, so we changed. Too many couldn't remember or pronounce name so we changed again.

Is it just me, or does this blade look similiar to the Wegner? If you lower the thumb ramp on the Pro-Venator, it looks a lot like the Wegner to me.

Pro-Cut is where I got a couple of them. There may be more where they came from. My web page (as always) needs updating, and I should talk crass commercial details off-forum.

Cool reason, really cool name, now that I know what it means. Thanks Sal.

It turns out that the Blanchard Pro-Venators are not "old stock" but a continuing low-production item, though not through Spyderco. There's also a serrated Police model with a similar overlay with a flying eagle. I'll scan that when I get one. The embelished Police model is also obtainable in plain edge, if one doesn't mind waiting a while. Prices are comparable to William Henry and Chris Reeve.

James - the "Screaming Eagle" Police Model was the most popular of the Blanchard pieces.
