Well I got a chance to use my new Blaze belts, no complaints, they grind just fine and I'm waiting to see how long they actually last. One thing, do they feel "gummy" to you? I'm grinding 1084 and the belts feel gummy like I'm grinding titanium or something. Not complaining just a different feel, not like grinding with 977s or zircs. I did notice they don't throw sparks like the belts I normally use for rough grinding.

Will, you need to give them a chance to chew. :D I switched over to Norton Hogger's after I used Blaze belts for a couple years. I still think the Blaze belts are the best and a little faster. I've tried to keep track on how many blades I got out of one belt but never did follow through with it.

I found with the blaze belts , I need to grind with sunglasses on or I get a headache from the color. But I love em !

They don't really throw a lot of sparks when griding carbon steel.. The "gummy" feel may be because the belt is chewing steel away very fast. Blaze belts are about the only ones that I have found that can attack forging scale and come out okay, but they are a bit pricey to use for that.

Why did you switch, Ray?

I did notice that I had a lot of little 36x metal splinters in my fingers while showering :p They did a great job, just gotta see how they last compared to the 977s.

When I first used Blaze belts, I wasn't convinced that they lasted any longer than the zirconia belts. Now that I have tried them again, it seems that they get beat up looking just as quickly as the blue belts, BUT they continue to grind much more agressively even in that sorry looking condition. I have never been able to grind 3 blades with one belt like some people claim to do, but I can get all the way though one with a Blaze 50-60. They also seem to cut as if they were a grit size coarser so I have never seen the need to buy 36 or 40 grit Blazes. 50-60 grit will do the job as well as 36 or 40 zirconias and 120 grit Blazes cut like 80-100 grit zirconia, but leave a finer finish. The 120's also seem to cu much faster than 120 AO belts and last at least 3 times as long.
