Hello everyone!

I have a few posts here on the traditional forums but have mainly been a lurker. My interest in traditional knifes started as a boy exploring the woods and lakes of northern Sweden with my grandfather. I now have a couple of heirloom knives and a few bought ones in my collection. Both folders and fixed blades. When I'm better installed in my new house (as in: got an Internet connection and computer) the plan is to snap a few pictures and make a proper contribution to this wonderful part of the Internet.

Today I seek guidance from you knowledgeable people.

I turned 30 today. My beautiful partner (is that the term to use? Not married but might as well have been) surprised me with a trip to New York mid February. We're gonna be there for 5 days. We've talked about it for a long time but never gotten around to make it reality. On top of it all we're going to the Rangers vs Red wings game in Madison Square Garden!

While there I'd like to take the opportunity to look at, and hopefully buy, one or a couple of knives that are hard to come by in Sweden. It doesn't have to be super exclusive stuff, just regular knives for you American members. I'm mainly thinking about Case, Buck etc. (including, not limited to). Knifes that cost twice as much here or that cost the same amount to ship as it cost to buy. Time is also a factor here since we're there for only 5 days. We are staying on Manhattan and I doubt we'll be making many trips far away from Manhattan.

What are my best bets? Reading here on the forum I've come to understand that you can find knifes in big box stores, sports stores etc. What can I look out for to be able to find some (i.e. Case knifes, doesn't have to a big selection, just one or two would make my day) traditional folders. What are the names of those big box/sports stores?

P.S. Can I expect any trouble keeping knifes in my suitcase? It will be checked in, not hand luggage.

Thank you for your time.

On the suitcase thing... it's highly unlikely.
They will not care that you have knives checked in.
If you have too many they might think you want to resell and might ask for customs payment.
For stag/horn/bone/wood and especially ivory you might encounter an overzealous customs-worker to ask for biological ID, but seeing as it's US to Sweden it shouldn't be a real issue (especially if you have the documentation for them). Australia and New Zeeland are very strict on those.
The biggest possible issue would be to have them get lost... it's far more common that you might think, especially if you need to change flights.

In short I think you have a 95% chance for everything to be ok, the 5% having nothing to do with the knives being knives (especially if you don't get automatics, balisongs, pushdaggers which are frowned upon in many places).

Thanks for the response. Yeah I'm with you on the luggage getting lost part. We are not changing flights though. One flight straight to NY.

My concern was mainly about knives being knives. Getting them into Sweden is no problem. It was out of US I was worried about since there's high security and what not.

I don't travel via plane, but I have heard to wrap your knives in your underwear in suitcase.

Why? They are scanning packages with X-Rays and that goes right through clothes. I have travelled 50+ times by plane and have never-ever had my checked-in backage opened.
As long as it's not explosives, drugs or harmful chemicals they shouldn't care less what you bring in...

Yeah, don't put knives in your underwear: it would be very bad if you forgot to take them out before using your underwear again.

I think you may have a hard time finding a store that carries pocket knives in Manhattan. I live in a medium-sized city and even our Spring Goods stores rarely carry anything better than Gerber.

If you are able to find a WalMart, they usually do carry Buck knives. If you look hard (or maybe make some calls) you may be able to find a hardware store that carries Case knives. Ace Hardware has been pretty reliable at having Case knives but I don't know if there are any in Manhattan.

I was thinking the same thing as Macchina. I could be wrong, but I'm doubtful New York City is going to be your best bet for finding traditional pocket knives in stores. Heck, even in the parts of country I live in and/or frequent that are more "knife-friendly" (Arkansas, Texas, Arizona), traditional knife availability in stores has declined significantly, and most of what you'll find are modern-style knives.

Hopefully a knife-knut familiar with NYC/Manhattan can chime in and offer you some helpful advice. Best of luck, and enjoy your trip!

The knives will be fine in checked baggage as long as theyre closed. Youre' supposed to sheath fixed blades so they dont cut themselves if they inspect your bag.

I live in New York City and I'll tell you there are really not many places to buy pocket knives. Some Hardware stores will carry Victorinox knives and most have Leatherman tools. You can find Opinels in cheese shops and fancier kitchen supply stores. I know a couple places off hand that have Buck Knives and a bigger selection of Victorinox, but dont think I've found Case in any stores here. Email me (click on my username and select email) and I can give you a couple locations to check out. FYI the mods dont usually like us talking about stores that aren't paying members of the site. You might be better off buying the knives online and having them shipped to your hotel. Most hotels have no problem receiving packages for their guests. I'm not sure I'd do a dozen packages, but one or two would probably be fine.

GEC knives are the best traditional style knives being made today. I think your only option would be to buy them online ahead of time. Maybe they could be shipped to a BF member who lives in NYC and you could then meet and exchange knives. ("exchange" you could bring a knife from Sweden as a gift for this person. Mora's are always a good knife).

Do not put knives in a carry on. Place them in your checked bag and hope that they don't get removed (as in stolen) by baggage inspectors or lost (as in entire bag lost). These two scenarios are the 5% chance identified above. That being said, I've checked multiple traditionals, at the same time, in the same bag and have not had an issue to date when traveling for work. Now, you force me to "knock on wood" and hope that I haven't jinxed myself into that 5 % category.

I second this. Pay for Express or next day shipping and have knives shipped to your hotel, that or buy them a day or so before you arrive from some of our knife dealers.
I'd even call up one of our frequent dealers and explain you only have 5 days there. Call the hotel and tell them you've packages coming in and to put them on hold if you buy them while you're still overseas. Just keep them in the tube on your way back and pack them into a box. I've never had issues with knives that are in packages via air travel. You could even go the extra step and wrap them as 'gifts'. I think it'd be well worth all the trouble :)

I've lived in NYC and there are no worthwhile shops in my opinion. That and all the luxury kitchen cutlery shops sell their knives at full MSRP

Hope you have a wonderful trip while in the city. Should be beautiful albeit frosty in February.

Too bad you don't have more time . Only 5hr 55mins to Titusville from Manhattan .

Might check Case's website for dealers in the area you will be visiting. They have a list.

If Carbon Steel is your thing, look at Case CV in Yellow Delrin and Chestnut Bone (you might even contact the store to see if they carry Case CV steel knives). Most places will have lots of stainless case knives to offer.

Right, didn't think about that policy. I'll send you an email.

I can add I fine with general instructions about what type of stores to look for.

That thought did cross my mind!

That would have been awesome if I had more time. I know just what knife I would have brought. Maybe next time!

The Walmart in Mohegan Lake, just north of NYC, will have the largest knife assortment of any local WM store. However, I would take the advice of everyone else on here and buy online, ship to hotel.

i too am from NYC, leave me a visitor message if you are interested in some places that you may most likely pass by in your travels while in Manhattan

You're not going to have troubles carrying knives in your checked in luggage (except for autos, or huge knives). I never had troubles carrying a knife or two in my checked in suitacse from Europe to NYC or any other US airport. There are bigger chances that your luggage could get lost :p
I second the suggestion of shopping online and having the knives shipped to your hotel. Ask them if you can have a package sent there (don't think they'll say no) and shop online a week or two before your arrival (to defeat all odds). More choice as well.
Enjoy NYC. Not many knives there...but surely many other interesting things to see ;)
