Bless her lil' heart. Guidance needed.

Yeah, don't put knives in your underwear: it would be very bad if you forgot to take them out before using your underwear again.

I think you may have a hard time finding a store that carries pocket knives in Manhattan. I live in a medium-sized city and even our Spring Goods stores rarely carry anything better than Gerber.

If you are able to find a WalMart, they usually do carry Buck knives. If you look hard (or maybe make some calls) you may be able to find a hardware store that carries Case knives. Ace Hardware has been pretty reliable at having Case knives but I don't know if there are any in Manhattan.

I was just in Manhattan for 4 days. It was my first time on the island. There is NOTHING there as far as knives are concerned. At least not that I saw. And I looked!!! But to be honest, I did not do an Internet search before hand to find any sellers in the area. Heck I had a hard time finding any big box stores. Also, I was not there to buy knives, LOL.

Depending on where you are though on the island, you might have better results. I recommend you do a lot of Internet searching and planning because if you aren't leaving the island, then your choices are going to be extremely limited I suspect.

Also, NYC knife laws are very strict. Research those too.

Good luck.

I second this. Pay for Express or next day shipping and have knives shipped to your hotel, that or buy them a day or so before you arrive from some of our knife dealers.
I'd even call up one of our frequent dealers and explain you only have 5 days there. Call the hotel and tell them you've packages coming in and to put them on hold if you buy them while you're still overseas. Just keep them in the tube on your way back and pack them into a box. I've never had issues with knives that are in packages via air travel. You could even go the extra step and wrap them as 'gifts'. I think it'd be well worth all the trouble :)

I've lived in NYC and there are no worthwhile shops in my opinion. That and all the luxury kitchen cutlery shops sell their knives at full MSRP

Hope you have a wonderful trip while in the city. Should be beautiful albeit frosty in February.

THIS ^^^

I would order them about 3 days prior to your arrival at the hotel. Arrange to be sure the hotel will accept the package and make sure the seller knows it's PRIORITY mail and to not delay. That way you can pick up a GEC or exactly what you want.

I don't have anything to add to the actual discussion that others haven't already said, but I have ask about the title of this thread. "Bless her heart" is sort of a southerner's backhanded insult that's often missed by folks who aren't from here. The meaning of the phrase is something along the lines of "Oh, bless her heart. She's too dumb to understand how dumb she is." Add to that that you're a dude, and I'm confused. Maybe I'm being dense and missing something, in which case, just reply "Oh, bless your heart"...

To the OP . . .

You are not going to have any problem with TSA or US Customs (which does not even check what you send OUT OF the US) with any Case knives in your checked bag(s). If you are going to have any problem, it will be with customs in Sweden, and you would probably be in a position to know more about that than pretty much anyone here.

I know it would be fun to go to a store and shop for knives, but you just so happen to be travelling to probably the LEAST knife friendly venue in the entire USA. Pick almost any other place and I bet we could give you some decent options. Sorry. So I second or third those suggesting that you preorder and have your knife or knives deleivered to your hotel, and let the hotel know to hold a package for you.

Safe travels and have fun in NYC!

I don't travel via plane, but I have heard to wrap your knives in your underwear in suitcase.

Why? They are scanning packages with X-Rays and that goes right through clothes. I have travelled 50+ times by plane and have never-ever had my checked-in backage opened.
As long as it's not explosives, drugs or harmful chemicals they shouldn't care less what you bring in...

I think the underwear thing has to do with theft rather than security screening. The thinking being that the scumbag baggage handling thief going through your bag for goodies will not want to stick his hands into some dude's dirty underwear to feel around for something.

I HAVE had my bag opened. More than once. By TSA - they even leave you a note to let you know they did it.

I thought the same thing, but maybe the expression has a different meaning in Sweden (?).

I've made two round trips by airplane since 9/11 and collected three "Your bag was opened for inspection by the TSA" cards in my checked luggage.

I can't add anything of note to this thread. All the posts are good advise.
I hope you have a great trip.

Since this forum is for knife discussion and not where to buy them, I'm going to close it now.
