Well, I have been blessed with a new weapon in my whittling arsenal. I never expected this gift from Jakeywax31 Jakeywax31 . Nor do I really know what I had done that prompted such kindness and generosity. However, not being one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I am grateful to accept.

Thanks Paul for this and the other gifts that are in process of being razor edged.

I started with my soft Arkansas stone, to get a feel for it, that didn’t do nothing but dull my stone. So I used my dmt diamond stone to get it where I wanted and finished with my translucent Arkansas and a few swipes on the leather.

They temper their 1095 harder than woodpeckers lips. I’m more accustomed to chicken beaks... now we’ll see how it does.

I forgot to mention. This is my first foray with GEC and with micarta as handle material.

🤔

Good work, everybody!

I love these knives, and they are my absolute favorite whittlers. I have a ton of splitback whittlers and the pocket carver is (in my humble opinion) the best design of them all. A natural linen version is my user. And yes, Dan is the man.

Can those that have one anyone offer tips on sharpening?

What I did so far that worked is, fine DMT, extra fine DMT, translucent Arkansas, strop. That gave me a very nice edge. However, after using it some it needed a touch up and it seemed I needed to go back to the DMT stone before the translucent Arkansas would do any good.

I probably will pick up an xxfine dmt next.

I forgot, (just remembered) I have green polishing compound; I can load a strop and try that for touch ups.

Opinions may differ but here is mine about that important topic.
For wood whittling you have to set an acute edge angle (from 20° to 25°inclusive).
To achieve this task you can use a DMT coarse or fine plate. A ceramic stone up to 1000 grit will work as well.
Now is coming the problem.
You need, for whittling, a keen and polished edge. Each time I've used an extrafine diamond plate i've got weird results, most of the time edge holding problems, using the extra-extra fine didn't work better. I didn't understand why until i read this very interesting study:

So for keening the edge and fix some minor damages i would advise the use of ceramic or natural stones. I stop at 5000 grit but one of those days i will get a 8000 or even 12000 grit ceramic stone.

The frequent use of a leather strop is highly recommended. You won't need to go back to the stone that often.

Dan.

Thanks for your insight.
