Well...I am clearly no electrician. I was wiring up my motor and VFD for the Pheer. Followed the diagram, but either had a surge or crossed a wire. The box powered up, then...the dreaded smell of burning components. I opened it up and it looks like the large black resistor next to the AC power leads is fried.

Is this something I can fix locally or will I need to order a new 24D?

Help me Obi-Wan K-Nifey, you're my only hope.

I do realize that most of you are probably scratching your collective heads thinking that even an untrained monkey can wire those up.

I am in the Navy and not very good with things that have electronic components. I once was sent to a two week school to learn a system called PTW 4.0, for targeting (not my job) the purpose being they wanted to see if I could break the system. Short version....yep.

Heh! Where are you at? If you're in a big city, it shouldn't be too hard to find an electronics repair joint... worth looking into.

South Miami.

I just ordered a new one from a reputable dealer. I will likely repair this one and wire it up to a disc sander eventually (or sell it off).

Call KB, they are here in Fl and hooked me up when I had trouble with mine, and it was totally out of warranty. Good people

There's a chance it was faulty from the factory, or something could have loosened up during shipping. I don't remember what kind of warranty or service KB offers, but if it's a brand new VFD, you should be able to exchange it.

If it's brand new from Pheer, I'd dial the owner up and see about a replacement too. From what I understand, he's pretty good about taking care of customers.

Had no idea that KB was that close! Great info. Thanks!

KB Electronics is great at repairing VFDs at a reasonable price. It's one of the many advantages of biting the bullet, and buying one.

New VFD came in last night. Reading through the enclosed papers and watching as many youtube videos as possible to set it up this time.

Success!!! Grinder and VFD are up and running. Tapered tang and ground out one blade already and I am loving the new 2x72. Huge difference in feel from the old Craftsman 2x42.

Maybe thats one of those life mysterys never to solve.
Fwiw, I only seen one VFD blown up right off the crack. That was from connecting power to its load terminals.

Happy its running for the guy. Its a satisfaction always of success when first hooking up something.

I can also vouch for KB's excellent service. I also fried a 27d and they replaced the board for me for a reasonable cost. Much better than buying it all over again.

I had a KBAC unit blow up on me once while it was turned off. Still no idea how that happened. You just never know sometimes with electronics. The dealer was kind enough to replace the unit for me when KBAC was unwilling.
