Blind Horse Knife -General Use (Recommendation)

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a general purpose fixed blade with a flat, saber, or scandi grind. Preferably the blade would be approximately 4" in length & made from tool steel. I will be using it for camping, hiking, & hunting. I want hard use capabilities even though I plan on carrying a chopper and an axe, keeping my knife reserved for knife jobs.

I like the look and reputation of the BHK products & was hoping for recommendations from members that have experience with BHK or similar makes. Why did you choose the model you own? How does it fare on basic tasks?

I'm also checking the knife makers here daily as a custom is definitely a consideration.

My budget is about $200.

Thanks for any assistance.

BHK woodsman pro sounds about perfect for you. They do a fantastic job on their O1, takes a great edge, extremely tough, and just eats through wood.

I've picked up some prettier knives that I like to carry for short hikes and what not, but when I know I'm going to be really using my knife I grab my BHK.

I agree with JimmyD on the quality of BHK's heat treat. It's my favorite using O-1 with it's rc 57-59 hardness, triple temper and cryo. It sharpens beautifully and has great edge stability. It does eat wood with the edges you can give it.

The grips are comfortable and have no hot spots. They fit me and I have XXL hands.

I like the "Bushcrafter" ( 4 inch, scandi or FFG, V grind, not convex) with Micarta. Price around $140 ish.

second choice is the "long trail" ( 3 inch blade, 1/8th inch stock, options same as above) Price $135-140. Some models get down to the $85 range

I can't link you to the dealer I use and quote prices from as they aren't contributing dealers at Blade Forums.

Good luck

I've been using their "GNS" for awhile now. I'm pleased with it. I would recommend it.

The "Brumby", "Maverick Scout", and "Woodsman Pro" seem to be their most "general purpose" designs. All available in O1 and all meet your budget.

If you want more heft, try the packhorse. Thicker and longer blade, that also means a little heavier.

I've always wanted to check out a BHK. But there has always been something else that strikes my fancy a ~little~ more. My most recent FB acquisition would really fill the niche your looking into. It's a TFK (Tango Foxtrot Knives) "Rubicon." Tom Ferry is a Master Smith who is now getting into Midtech knives. At $175 it is a pretty much unheard of opportunity to get such prestigious work! 4" blade, 3.5" edge, D2 tool steel with a super neat mortised hidden tang G10 handle & kydex sheath. The knife is super light & the quality is fantastic. I've been putting it through some testing and I am ecstatic about this fixed blade. It would probably be my highest recommendation for a sm/med FB. There aren't many out there but I know of two dealers that have one or two.

Thanks guys. Sounds like I won't be disappointed regardless of which model I choose. I'm going to look into the other recommendations before I buy but I'm leaning toward the brumby in a flat grind because is like the blade shape.

Hard to pull the trigger when I like them all. I could afford 2 maybe.... Hmmm

I've got a Brumby with a flat grind, great knife. I've had numerous large and small Workhorses, a Long Trail or maybe it's predecessor, a patch knife, a couple bushcrafters, a Woodsman Pro, a Scaatycrafter I should have kept, a machete which I gave to my brother in law, a Maverick Scout. I know I've had more than that. Should have kept them all.

Kept the Brumby the longest out of all of them, and plan on keeping it.

Keep an eye on their facebook page, they constantly put up special offers on their knives without listing it on their web page.

I really like BHK and almost bought a Brumby. I too, wanted a fixed blade to go with my camping setup (folder & hatchet). Ended up going with a JK Huron edc. Do not regret the purchase. Love the size for edc and John's micarta handles have some of the best ergos of any knife I own.

An update for those that gave advice:

I landed a new, Limited Edition, GNS/SRI for $105 which I think is a smoking deal. I'm thinking about buying a smaller BHK to pair with the 4 1/4" GNS.

For the smaller blade I'm considering:
Lil' Muk
Brumby Lite
Frontier Trapper
Woodsman
Buckman

They each have approximately 2 3/4" blades.

would you guys take blind horse over bark river?

I have seen a lot of BR knives for sale with scales delaminated from the blade tang, I might prefer BHK for that reason alone. Both companies have very interesting designs though.

That would be my choice.. I have/carry the Brumbylite and it is all it needs to be!! John

A pic of my one and only BHK when I received it, a Lumberjack LE. Lovely, stout and SHARP little knife... Just need a Lumberjack toothpick now as this one is a great user!

I wouldn't turn down a Bark River, but some are almost too fancy to use. Blades tend to be a bit thick,
and I'm not crazy for some of the posts I've read by the owner.

I love the looks of the little creek. Been thinking about picking one of those up soon.
