It's that time of year for hunters. Here is one hot off the bench. Forged blade of 1075, 416SS fittings w/ a fiber spacer, handle is blister curl maple with a little silver wire.
Please let me know what you think.
Thanks for looking.

That looks fantastic! Really like the sheath too. So, who's gonna do an inlay tutorial??? ;)

WOW! That looks great, the silver work is a good example of less is more, it really flows with the overall line of the knife.

Thanks fellas!:D
Next time I do some wire I will try and remember to take some pics of the process.

Mace, would you speak a bit on your finishing technique for the maple, that's one of the best finishes I've seen on maple in a long time. It's not stabilized is it? If so never mind.

+1 on the handle finish information
That's a great looking knife, and that handle finish is stunning

I love the knife and sheath too. What color dye did you use on the sheath?

Hey fellas,
The dye for the sheath is the same for the handle. It just a brown leather dye from Tandy, I think Fiebiens(?)
On the sheath it goes on full strength...maybe three coats.

On the knife...first coating is full strength...let dry, then sand almost all off(some stain should remain in the curls). The next coat is cut with some alcohol to lighten the color. During this time the handle may get sanded and stained a couple of times till I get the look I want. Once that is all dry I will burnish the wood a bit with some old blue jeans and then start my oil.
I use tru-oil...first coat is cut with some paint thinner so it seeps in real good. I will apply several coats of this thinned mix through out the day then let it dry over night. Next day I will sand it down with some 600 being careful not to sand into the stain. Wipe it down with some alcohol and give it another burnish...then a coat of oil(full strength) and wipe off with a paper towel...let dry and then do another coat and wipe off..let dry over night.
Next day I will decide if it needs another coat or any other work.
All silver wire and pins are done before any stain or oil.
Hope that helps some.

Mace, thank you for taking the time out to explain your finishing process. It's simply one of the best maple finishes I've seen.

That is one ugly sucker and you need to get rid of it in a hurry; mail to:
