Blockbuster to Bushwacker

That spine shot reveals another impressive aspect of the Browning Crowell/Barker. The tapered tang. How many factory knives can you name that have a tapered tang? It is usually a feature on custom, hand made knives. It can do wonders for the balance of a knife, especially a chopper made from thick stock, which might otherwise end up with too much weight in the handle. I have fat recurve Mistress that would really benefit from the weight transfer of a drilled or tapered tang.

Not only is the tang tapered, but the blade has a distal taper. Not many production knives have those features and a satin finish to boot. It is a pretty cool knife.

That's a killer edge HD...
Great job!

 ... ...

Are you reading my mind?

Been thinking about asking Garth if he would taper or drill out mine. :)

.

I'd like to send my KZ in and have it surface ground down to 3/16" and have some holes drilled in the tang. But I already have so much money in that knife, it will have to wait.

You're not the only one who's hoping to have their zilla modified. Since the stupid thing won't sell, I'm trying to find out how much it will cost me to get it turned into a knife I'll actually use.

While yours is in the shop, have it painted in Bama Clay!

I almost want to do that, just to see the reactions I would get here. I could have them remove the grips too, and switch it from satin / black paper to tan canvas / bama clay. It would almost be worth it, just to watch peoples' heads explode :D

Hats off to your sharpening skills!!!

Thanks, GRIM. Looking at it this morning, I can see the small imperfections in my work, but then I've never done a perfect grind in my life. Just holding a razor sharp BW makes me want to go out and whack something with it. After some serious use, it will be all scratched up anyway and those minor imperfections won't matter. While not as stylish as the FBM, I really think this BW is going to be a real user of a Misstress, and I am very happy to own one.

It'd be like trading in your Ferrari for a Fiero. Do it, lifes too short to make good decisions. :D

That CGFBM that you sold me that you convexed was sharp as a razor, I can testify first hand that your skills are far from a hack level, maybe they could use a little refinement on the aesthetics but I still have a pretty good scar on the palm of my hand from mis sheathing the CGFBM it and it bite me.....pretty bad.

Sorry about your injury, ArmyOf1. That FBM is good chopper. Whenever I sharpen knives for others, I always warn them, "Be careful, it's sharp." I may have forgotten to mention that when I sold it. I hope you have healed up ok.

You know they are sharp when they bite you good and you don't notice until you see the blood dripping. Happened to me when I was getting my killa zilla ready to sell - I was polishing up the blade and cleaning up the sap stains when it bit me HARD. It hurt a lot the next day, but when I first got sliced I had no idea, until I saw the blood splatter and looked down at the skin flapping around on my thumb.

One of these days I'll get good enough with my sander to put Third World Grind Shop quality edges on my blades, but they definitely get sharp enough for some serious use now.

Vic, what grit belt do you use to knock the shoulder off the edge to start your convexing? It was sunny today, so I stripped my BWM, and started on the ghetto satin process. All my belts are getting pretty worn, so it was slow going with two different worn 80x belts. I noticed that Lee Valley is offering free shipping, so I just ordered a fresh supply, including some 40x for hogging off metal, and some of those film belts in 180x and 320x to check them out.

Great, thanks. Glad I got some 40x on order, the worn out 80x are not doing the job.
