So..how do i start..

I'm new to the forum and i started using it to gather information about karambits...i love them.

This post is gonna make me look like an idiot, but i thought i would share.

Im constantly spinning my fake $13 ebay frank beltrame peice of crap karambit...simply because its fun, kinda like balisongs.

Well...yesterday, UPS dropped off my 5.11 tactical tarani journeyman karambit. I tightened up some of the screws and tried trying to figure out "kool" "tactical" ways to deploy the knife. haha...

i got really good at spinning the ebay knife and i never really cut myself that bad...probably because the ebay karam is nowhere near as sharp of the tarani...but after a while i got pretty confident with the tarani and it just became natural...but i got too confident...and the crazy sharp point punctured the main artery in my wrist...instantly blood is squirting everywhere and i feel like an idiot..i cant get it to stop bleeding...i rigged together a crazy tourniqet with a roll of medical tape...i got the bleeding artery plugged up..then i get this crazy idea that super glue will plug it up...and it burned like hell...but it slowed down the bleeding...then i went to the ER...and it was dumb because when they took off the bandage i rigged together it wasnt squirting anymore..the bleeding stopped...so i didnt even need to be in the ER...they gave me 3 stitches and i was on my way...the doctor said i was lucky because if i punctured my artery an worse, id probably need to be shipped off to the main hospital to see a specialist >_<

...i guess in conclusion...dont get too confident with your karambits...it just takes one retrieval from the extended position back into the reverse grip to puncture an artery...it wasnt even a big cut...it was tiny...it was like sombody poked me with a staple...but it squirted high enough to cover my face and the kitchen floor in blood...tarani karambits are awesome, very good quality...and that tip is wicked sharp...haha, you dont even need a sharpened blade...just that crazy curved sharp tip...

...sooo be careful...i cut myself within 2 hours of having the tarani karambit haha..push pin sized holes in your artery squirt...respect your karambits...FMA ftw...no more spinning for me...unless maybe i have a big metal wrist protector.

Sorry to hear that. I am glad it turned out ok. Be very careful in the future with sharp knives & please stop twirling it at all costs!

Twirling knives is almost as bad as throwing non-throwing knives... Since blood rust's steel like champion. Twiling itself serves no other purpouse than showing off.

There's also rule why never twirl loaded gun from finger guard... Especially if you haven't checked if safety is on...

LOL.. I know it's not funny, but I did the very same thing with my Emerson Combat Karambit... It took forever to stop bleeding

This was taken a couple of days after

A Tourniquet is never really a good idea... It can cause severe permanent nerve damage. The ONLY way I would recommend it is if you have a cut which would cause blood loss unstoppable by pressure, over a liter of blood in less than 30 mins. and you are immediately on your way to the ER. Next time just use pressure on the opening. Hold pressure until bleeding stops. The way you can tell if the bleeding stops is when the gauze stops filling up. NEVER remove gauze even if it fills with blood... just pile more on top... a t-shirt... whatever. It is nice to have whatever is touching your skin to be sterile though. Once the bleeding stops, you can determine if you need to go the the ER (or Urgent Care) for stitches... If the bleeding does not stop within an hour... Things are going to get complicated and expensive... and care is necessary and worth it. Glad to hear you got it taken care of though!

If you hit a artery then a tourniquet is a very good idea, even those small ones in your arm can cause lots of problems. If its real bad you could be dead in only a few minutes.

archieblue is completely correct: Tourniquet should be only used when there are extreme laceration wounds i.e. damage that has been severead completely or almost completely a body part and damaged major artery or vein. Tourniquette should be considered only as last extreme method when sacrficing body parts maybe needed in order to save life.

Pressure is only real choice when you get artery puncture like you described. There are places you can't use tourniquet, like neck (and chest and stomach area) ... Just press hard and stack the clothes.

However you mess up really bad i.e you puncture subclavian artery / vein or iliac veins/artery then things are bad. Only circulatory damages worse than those are direct damages to aorta / Vena Cava, heart or pulmonary arteries / veins.

Luckily you punctured "just a small" artery.

Edit: oh, yes, its also very hard to estimate amount blood is lost simply by looking the blood puddle. Even tiny amount of blood looks really huge amount of blood for most peoples. 1 dl blood on floor and peoples think its a liter. losing a liter blood would start effecting body.

That's why I never even bother to learn "spin" type techniques. It looks cool but I don't seem to find it practical for me.

I just like using the Emerson wave opener on mine and it's good to go. I have so many karambits now that I can't decide which one to carry........so usually it's two!

If you don't cut yourself real good once you're not a knife lover. If you manage to do it twice or more you're just a slow learner.

See the thread where the guy drops a knife onto his heel and severs his achilles. Doh!

That whole tourniquets are a last resort idea is changing as medicine often does when info starts coming from lessons from the battlefield. In Combat lifesaver class tourniquets are now being taught to be put on as an early intervention with good effect . Being a Nurse and a civilian EMT I was skeptical but after speaking with a doc or two they agreed with the tourniquet use as taught to me by the Army, was also informed/reminded of their routine use during surgery. As for myself on the civilian side will follow my protocol's but when it's come to wearing green I'm in agreement with the thought process that keeping the red stuff circulating in the body is a good thing .
As for the original poster, I would say if your squirting blood and have to use a tourniquet to effectively control bleeding you have just entered the realm of EMS. Pick up a phone and get some help from the pro's.

Hemcon Bandage and dermabond, great to have around the house :D I have a case of each sitting around. Hit me up in the future if you need some. Hope you learned your lesson )

Okay, whew! I was going to reply to say, "stop typing and go to the hospital now! You'll bleed all over your keyboard and pass out." Seriously, glad everything's ok.

LOL, new knifes always bites! I nicked a big chuck out of my thigh a few years back trying out a new folder. Play safe.

Another note on tourniquets- if you're going to put one on in order to completely cut off blood flow, (which is extremely inadvisable in most cases, for the reason i am going to mention), DO NOT remove it. Completely cutting off circulation to an extremity will cause all the blood to clot, and if the tourniquet is removed all those little clots go back into your blood stream, and then you are basically SOL. A tourniquet is basically the decision to sacrifice the limb to save your life, and shouldn't be taken lightly.

thx for sharing your story. ive cut myself many, many, many times, but fortunately never anything as serious as you describe.

next time, just rub some dirt on it and go right back to spinning!!
