blood loss

We all knew you were a big softy ;)

I haven't gave blood in 3 or 4 years now, turns out I'm a bleeder :o

they pretty much make you do it in boot camp. You don't have to, but if you do you get juice and cookies and you get to sleep at a desk for a few minutes, so everyone does lol

other than that, mofo's have been bleeding me dry running all the bloodwork for my latest series of ailments...

You have 8 pints, a friend of mine's dad lost 6 when he severed an artery on his arm before he got to the hospital. I don't know what the number is where most people give out, but I'm pretty sure not many people lose 6 and live like him...

its awesome to see how many people donate. this is something i plan to keep doing as long as they'll take it from me. I think the good FAR outweights the bad in this case. plus those cookies were awesome!!

I am proud of you Beef! It takes some guts to be able to donate! Your a good man! :thumbup:to all who donate blood.

I absolutely HATE needles (I have 6 tattoos Lol I don't have to point out the irony in that) but it always makes me feel better when I give blood. :D Even though I do not enjoy it I know for some people, its life or death. You did a great job not passing out Beef! It's always nice being rewarded with a bagel and juice =)

Gosh, i didn't realize that so many people thought of giving blood as a big deal...
Cookies and drinks in return for a renewable resource... seems like a no-brainer.

I've been giving regularly since highschool and now have thicker venous tissue at their favorite cannulation points, making the veins prone to rolling. I warn the phlebotomist each time to beware of this, but I still end up with a hematoma on occasion. You can play with your physiology by adjusting diet beforehand - fasting vs eating vs high-calorie eating, drinking lots of water vs drinking lots of coffee. With a heavy meal and excessive coffee, I can spike my blood pressure via heart rate and blood volume so my veins are more pronounced. However, coffee can dehydrate you which reduces blood pressure even when your heart rate is high. Fasting also reduces blood pressure. Low blood pressure makes your veins harder to tap, slow to give, and blood loss with already low blood pressure can quickly induce hypovolemic shock. Odd that you started feeling hot, Beef, as most folks feel chilled (while still sweating).

Next time, eat a heavy meal (e.g. beef) and drink. And as mentioned in a post above, go drinking afterward ;) you'll be buzzing in no time.

^^^thanks for the advice. im more excited to get buzzed on the cheap next time ha ha. giving blood seems to be getting better and better

My boss and I talked about this yesterday ,he and his friends (in younger days) used to give blood and go get drunk after because it would only cost them half as much to get wasted. I used to do it in the hot parts of the summer because when they fill you with room temp saline it feels great to go for a walk when it`s 90 and you are chilled to the bone.

Good for all of you who donate. You save lives of not only those needing transfusions but also those individuals who have clotting disorders (many whom are children) as the blood PRODUCTS from donated blood are vital in modern medicine.

Yeah I wasn't aware that giving blood was such a big deal to everyone. It was always just kinda a normal thing, at least where I'm from. It always annoyed me though that you give all this damn blood and they just give you a cookie and a stupid glass of juice. They should give you a pizza, or a cheese steak, or a burger, or a super burrito or something. After all you just gave up all that blood, you've got to build it back up so you can give again. ;) :P

I have given blood a few times - usually without problems. But there was one time where I did pass out! :(

After I had finished and was out at the juice and cookie table, just sitting there having something to eat and drink, I started to feel a little wobbly. I sort of recall trying to put my head on the table but the next thing that I remember for sure was waking up flat on my back on the floor with a nurse asking me if I was ok.

Scary.

About a year ago I had major surgery and had to be given some blood so maybe I got a little back.
