Blood under the nail?

So - I learned this trick a while back and had occasion to use it this weekend.

I smacked my thumb nail with a piece of wood this weekend and started to get the 'blood under the nail' blackness going on. I went back inside - got my smallest drill bit - drilled through the nail and opened up the pocket where the blood was pooling. It releases the pressure and stops the nail from falling off or the black pocket from forming.

Just a tip.

I've hear of heat up a pin or a needle and using it to poke/melt through the nail. Make me cringe thinking about going to far though!

A co-worker said he did this many years ago. He used a drill press and the thought freaked me the hell out.

Thanks for re-kindling my heebie-jeebies!

right on... that is a great little skill to know.. we have done that a few times here... my dad was all about that when i was growing up... i also lerned that in a Wildeness EMT course i took...

Thanks for that good tip! Same thing happened to me a while back and I had that 'black pooling' for over 3 months. Too bad I didn't know about this earlier. :D

I went slow - and heated up the drill bit before trying. After seeing the bit poke out the bottom of my thumb a few times I realized I was a bit deep...

Okay - that last bit was just for PB... ;)

I've done the same thing using the awl on a SAK, just go through nice and slowly though, no rushing or you will regret it !!!!!!

Heating a paper clip with a lighter is safer b/c you only need to touch the nail lightly with the end of the clip, which melts through and then is immediately cooled by the blood rushing out. I did this for myself and others SO many times when I worked on a fishing boat in Alaska - far less potential for accidents than using a drill (especially when on a rolling boat!).

My best friend smashed his thumb while working on his Evo VIII, and a big, nasty bed of blood formed under his thumb nail. He called me and as like "DUDE!!! You have to come over and fix my thumb!!" He called me because before I was in Recon....I was a medic, and he didn't trust anyone else!! No prob....Mike to the rescue!! I used a medium thickness suture needle with a cutting point. Threw some 90% Iso on his nail and needle, then heated the needle red hot with a lighter. It went through his thumb nail like a hot knife through butter. A volcano of blood ensued, followed by a few expletives from David!! I laughed my ass off when he started cussing! A little bactine spray after the procedure helps kill the pain a little as well.

I'd sooner cut of a mangled finger with a knife than go thru a blood under the nail treatment. UUUHG HEEEBY JEEEBIES!
