If the motor has brushes it is what is referred to as a universal motor, which can be run by a speed controller typical of what is used for routers in a wood shop.
Harbor freight sells one for $20 see link below but you can usually find a coupon or catch one on sale for half price. If you motor doesn't have brushes I'd have to see the name plate data to determine the type of motor.

Put a gate on the blower. Just a plate of steel that will adj. open for more air or closed for less. Cheap and easy.

I'd go with the gate also. Simple and effective with nothing to break down.

So long as you can just plug it into a standard 120V outlet, the dimmer switch will work. Avoid the sewing machine pedal. Its a real pain in the neck to try and hook up. I've tried to use one before and it was just too complex to make it work. The gate would also work. If you take apart most controlers, you'll find a dimmer switch and an extra fuse, and thats about it. I actually did wire in a dimmer swtich to my blower and it works great.

thanks guys i believe i will try the dimmer switch as it it now it has no on and off switch just a plug. i do have a sewing machine pedal from a portable machine that you plug the machine into the pedal and then the pedal into the outlet.
