Blown burner question

This might be a silly question but I need to have clarity: In place of a gate valve, on the blown burner I’m working on, can I use a ball valve? The 2” one after the blower to throttle the air flow.

I’m currently collecting the bits and pieces to replace my venturi burner. I have access to cheap used ball valves. If it won’t work (cause too much turblance in the air stream from the blower) I will look elsewhere.

A ball valve will work but a gate valve has a more linear control. Also alot of gate valves seal with a metal to metal contact so thy handle higher temps much better.

As JT said, a ball valve will work.

The engineering reason a gate valve is better is the air flow does not get angled as it would through a ball valve. The straight air flow creates much less turbulence and thus allows better burner function.

In the long and short, the extra turbulence isn't significant enough to matter.

JT: I believe I read a thread about forge design and I think it was you that mentioned you were using a soft fire brick forge instead of kaowool. I have an abundance of soft fire brick and a lack of cash to buy kaowool. I was wondering if you would be willing to share some quick pics of the forge... if it is in fact yours.

I apologize if it isn’t you. I’ve read so many posts and so many stickies over the last 4 years of lurking on this forum.

This forge? If so it’s mine.

Thanks! Everyone on this forum is fantastic. You all are a huge knowledge base and I am so thankful you guys are willing to share that knowledge.

One question: is that a ribbon burner or just a support for the traditional burner?
