Blue Khuk

It is tomato harvesting time in Wisconsin...and what raw tomato will do to a carbon steel blade still amazes me. No more shiny!!! Blueing, browning, tomato-ing...are all just organized oxidation, I think...sort of controlled rusting.

Keyboard? Shut off computer. CAREFULLY pry the problematic key off from top and bottom of the key... Just two spade connectors with hooks there...(operative word: carefully)...and with a Q-tip with alcohol or some non-detergent cleaner, wipe off the contacts on the board. If it is just one key that is giving you problems, most likely some debris got in there (cat hair, dust, a treasure map to untold riches, etc.) and is blocking the contacts. If the rest of the board works, it is unlikely you need to replace it.

and, because it came up when I spell-checked:

WORD HISTORY Among the greatest contributions to world civilization made by the early inhabitants of the Americas are plant foods such as the potato and squash. The tomato, whose name comes ultimately from the Nahuatl language spoken by the Aztecs and other groups in Mexico and Central America, was another important contribution. When the Spanish conquered this area, they brought the tomato back to Spain and, borrowing the Nahuatl word tomatl for it, named it tomate, a form shared in French, Portuguese, and early Modern English. Tomate, first recorded in 1604, gave way to tomato, a form created in English either because it was assumed to be Spanish or under the influence of the word potato. As is well known, people at first resisted eating this New World food because its membership in the nightshade family made it seem potentially poisonous, but it is now is an important element of many world cuisines

hehe...yep. I was just milking the humor factor

bought a cheap USB keyboard to hold us over until I can get the laptop cleaned out...it's ugly in there. :shudder:

Danged cats. They take turns sleeping on the keyboard if I forget to shut it down before bedtime.

Nice job. I want to see what one of these looks like up close, so I think I'll be bluing one this week sometime. Have to work late everyday so I may have to wait until Friday. Hmmmm, maybe I'll call in sick. I haven't done that in about a year. Think I'm due. ;)

Some natural juice and sap will stain your khukuris in funny colors. Bannana tree sap turns khukuris a black color that when lightly sanded and cleaned turns into a greyish/purplish shade. A 18" or longer khukuri should zip through a 4-5" diameter bannana tree trunk with no problem. Great fun too... :D

Anybody found another recipe they'd like to share?

If you want a steelier gray-black, you can blue the blade then use a scotch-brite pad or steel wool to bring the steel color back out of the blakish finish.

It's amazing what sissies there are in the military, isn't it? Artillery systems and fully automatic weapons are just the tools of the trade, but carrying a large knife makes you some kind of freak .

Dead on, though I suspect that depends on branch of service and unit (I was Army Intel, yeah, I know, an oxymoron). I carried an old ka-bar slung on my LBE back in Korea and caught flak for it (didn't stop me from wearing it  ). One day out on a field problem my Lt asked me if I could throw it, I didn't answer, but drew and whipped it into a 5 or 6" bole about 15 feet away. Probably the luckiest throw I've ever made, but the Lt was always very polite to me after that.
