'Blue on blue'

Oh, Tom! One of the oldest of brit traditions is to argue the toss and blindly shout out that you are right and the law is wrong! It's the basis of common law, the oldest working legal system on earth. I also think that that which is written on the Met site is pure bunkum. Possibly my friend is not too up to date re: offensive weapons etc, as he's not done any criminal stuff for ages, only corporate.

And, by the way Tom, I'm playing a tape of soothing sea sounds and whale song. You may feel it appropriate to do the same, but, obviously I don't know...
I was very impressed to hear of you literary stuff. Is it published under your forum name? If not e-mail me direct with your, ha-ha, 'non-de-plume', so I can, as you southern folk say "take a butcher's, cor-blimey", and you true identity will remain unblemished.
Yours, loathing this horrid little group of islands,
David

Yup; the historical stuff is really just a sideline, though (pays just about enough to keep me in khukuris...) The stuff that pays the rent is mainly SF/fantasy

Wow! Tom, I going to the library tomorrow. I too have tried to write, although not to sell, merely for my own entertainment. I started aged about 7, a short story about a car race. It was not terrifically good. My standard of writing has remained the same. What starts as an interesting plot, strong characters, steady pace and so on either ends up as bizarre, purple, quasi-Victorian nonsense, or as pure, unalloyed pornography. (Although I reckon the Victorians knew a few things about pornography! Have you ever read 'The Pearl'? Fabulous!) Or some boring 'murder-in-prison' rubbish. I'll leave the writing to those with talent and stick to reading, my first love.
Yours,
David

Thanks, Bill & David. Bill, you're absolutely right about luck counting for more than talent &c; I'm just grateful that the Force has been with me so far...
