I need to get some material for a lanyard tube that will take hot bluing, any suggestions? I can get some mild tubing but it's larger than I really want to use. I need something around 1/4" or so.

Oh Just buy some 1/4" mild steel rod and drill a hole in the center. there is an easy trick to doing this.

No lathe but I can think of 2 ways now that you shook my brain loose :p

Do the Moran long block drilling trick of touching a point on the vise and the tip of the bit to line up the centeroints then drilling. Or to chuck up the rod and put a bit in the drill vise and use my drill press like a vertical lathe.

Thanks for waking my brain up, we need a smacking forehead emoticon.

just chuck the rod stock in the drill and put a loose vise under it. lower the press into the vise and tighten the vise on the rod stock. and then clamp down the vise, unchuck the rod and replace with a drill bit, drill your hole and you have tubing or washers for shadow slipjoints. sounds complicated but If I can do it surely you can.

That's even simpler than what I was planning... .course if a former Marine is doing it it'd better be pretty simple. :D

God bless the Marine Corps.

1/4 inch brake line might take hot bluing, rub the aluminized stuff off the outside and it will rust.
