I've been using a bluing pen/marker. It's basically a Sharpie type of marker. It should be very easy to control, depending on your pattern. I pick mine up at my local gun store for about $5.
There's a technique for fabrics called "batik," involving putting wax on the areas you do NOT want to dye, and creating patterns in that manner. I've seen incredibly complex designs created by a master of it.
Might work for metal, with a certain allowance for less than perfectly defined edges/lines.
