Blur black plain or spyderco persistance?

I have 3 limited edition blurs. I'm carrying an orange CPM 154 blur right now that I use every single day. It has yet to let me down and it's a joy to use.

Stop thinking, click buy on the Blur, then show a picture of the knife once you get it over on the Kershaw facebook page. :)

FWIW:
The coating on my black Blur was crappy and started coming off almost immediately. I replaced it with the non-coated S30V version. Good folder with a clip that, unfortunately, has always been too tight to use.

You're the first person I've heard who's had a problem with the coating scratching off. What you were most likely experiencing is that other materials that you were cutting deposited itself onto the coating externally.

It can all be rubbed off.

The Kershaw Blur is an amazing knife for it's price and I've beat mine to hell over the past 3 years. It's still going strong and I won't be retiring it any time soon.

I have both of these knives and really want to edc one of them....in your own opinion which would you carry and why? Its a hard call

If you already have both, why choose only one? Give each a little pocket time if you like 'em both.

I will admit that I carry my Persistence more often than my Blur. The tight clip issues combined with the super grippy trac-tec inserts makes the Blur a little more difficult/annoying to slip in and out of my pocket. Maybe I should ditch the clip and just try lanyard carry...

The Blur is one of the best EDC knives ever, imo.

Agree wholeheartedly. I love the look and feel of the Kershaw Blur. I have it in both black plain edge and regular plain. The solid crack of its opening action actually got me interested in learning more about knives.

14C28N actually...which beats 8Cr13MoV like a red headed stepchild.

Older Kershaw Blurs were 440A... recently they updated to 14C28N

But you are correct, 14C28N kicks 8Cr13MoV around the block

how so? carbide volume, attainable hardness, impact toughness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, or something else?

14C28N

8Cr13MoV
0.80% C
13.0% Cr
0.40% Mn

0.50% Si
0.10% V
0.15% Mo

To be specific, I've found 14c28n to be capable of taking a much finer edge, hold it for significantly longer in most cutting tasks (especially cutting cardboard, rope, plastic wrapping, plastic packaging, etc.) and be far less prone to chipping than 8Cr13MoV. That's just my experience, but judging from the responses on this forum, it's safe to say I'm not alone in that assessment.

Personally, I couldn't tell molybdenum from a hole in the ground, so I'll leave the chemistry to other folks...I just use my knives.

we have cookies :)

Do the 8Cr and 14C knives come in at about the same hardness on the Kershaws that feature these steels?

I understand that 8Cr13MoV looks great on paper and also looks good under a microscope, but in real life uses, I have found it quite inadequate in comparison with other steels such as 14C28N. While it is a decent steel for value knives, I have had constant issues with chipping, rust spots & edge holding.

Never used that black coated Blur to cut anything. When I say the coating started coming off right away, I mean after just opening and closing for a few days.

That aside, that Blur was a drawer potato.

After conferring with Kershaw customer service, I returned that black coated Blur for the uncoated S30V model. Since bought a second, a blem from Kershaw guy.

No problems with either S30V blade, which IMO is the Blur's strong point, along with its ergonomic thumb studs.

FWIW: Not too keen on the handle or the ultra-tight clips, and had the torsion bars removed for manual use.

Because of the clip, it's hard for me to EDC.

Lucky me, I discovered the thin, light Skyline. The clip isn't deep-pocket or black, but it works just fine.

Hope this helps.

has anyone make direct comparisons to knives made of 8Cr14 or 7Cr13 from the same maker? With chipping and rusting issues I wonder what shifts in alloying fix the issues.

I enjoy traditional knives for what they are and with their soft steels, but everything is better at 62+ :)
