BM 530 Purdue VS. BM Mini Griptilian 556

530. It is lighter, thinner, prettier and "strong enough." The Grips are much more 'heavy duty."

Yea, I figured that much. I guess I shoulda said I was looking for something thatr would ride in the pocket better. Which has better ergos though? Which blade would be better for cutting, I'm talking plain edge for both.

I much prefer the blade shape of the Mini Grip. I also like the feel of it in the hand and way it rides in my pocket- it's my favorite EDC. It's cheaper, too.

Now, if you like freaking out the sheeple, you definitely want the 530!

The 530 is my primary EDC and it rides GREAT in a pocket. At less than two ounces you hardly notice it's there, and the super-flat profile prevents ugly bulges if you happen to be wearing dressier clothes. It takes a mean edge, and the blade has such a thin profile that you have an easy time cutting just about anything, providing it's not to extreme. It's definitely a lighter-weight knife than the mini-grip, but that's kind of the point, eh? :D

I actually traded off my 530 for another 556. The Mini Grip is just more stout and I don't care for the recessed/concave axis button on the 530.

I never liked Purdue, always been a Michigan fan myself. ;)
The Grips are over rated in my opinion, feel real cheap in the hand.
Don't care much for 530's either or Benchmades in general(except the 710).
:D

530...Thinner than the large grip and lighter...

Grip mini or large-- Stronger- better grip and ergo's for sure..

XION, what are you going to be using the knife for? How are you going to be carrying it? (in dress pants, in BDU's etc.) Do you live in a knife friendly community?
Personally, I'd get the 530--I've heard pretty good reviews about it. I've heard lots about the griptilion, but it just doesn't turn me on...

General EDC, I would wear it mostly in Jeans, Khaki Shorts, Plaid Shorts, ETC. summer clothing. I do take my kinves with me to CAP, so BDU's will be used too.

I'm interested in a very pocket freindly, thin, lightweight, yet sturdy knife that doesn't make people think I'm some serial killer. I already carry a subclaw, and wanted something a little less....hmm specialized when it comes to blade design.

I really want a BM, and I can get them for around 50-75.

I am considering:

BM 530 Plain edge
BM 556 Plain Edge
SOG Visionary 1

any other suggestions would be nice to.

If I could get side by side pics of them both, or maybe pics of them in hand, that would be great.

I don't know about the 530 but I have a full size Grip, and I love it. I have always been a huge fan of slipjoint folders becouse of the ease of carry, and multiple blades, but my grip hasn't got dull enough that a strop wouldn't bring it back, and It rides VERY comfortably in the pocket. I'm glad I chose it over the mini.

I have owned the 530 and a 555, and they are very different. For my EDC, the 555 was a little on the short side and the 530 was a little on the light/thin side. I like to have a little weight so I know I am using a KNIFE.

The 530 was very well made and it was my sharpest folder. It would easily cut hair above the skin, the sharpest knife out of the box yet (yes, even sharper than my Spydies). The 530 was also comfortable to hold and use, especially considering how thin the handle is. I guess I just didn't like the dagger shaped blade for utility purposes, although it did cut well. The lock was a little harder to disengage than other Axis models out there, but it was easy enough.

I say just get both they are great knives to have. Use one for casual EDC and the other for more formal occasions, or you could just alternate (variety keeps life interetsing). I like smaller knives also, but I bought a 551 full size Grip today and I am really lovin' it, you might want to look into it as well.

I have owned both and recommend the 556.

I found the 530's handle too straight, the thumbstuds more fiddly to operate and the Axis studs more difficult to manipulate.

I would like those pics.

Here they are:
