BM 530 Purdue VS. BM Mini Griptilian 556

General EDC, I would wear it mostly in Jeans, Khaki Shorts, Plaid Shorts, ETC. summer clothing. I do take my kinves with me to CAP, so BDU's will be used too.

I'm interested in a very pocket freindly, thin, lightweight, yet sturdy knife that doesn't make people think I'm some serial killer. I already carry a subclaw, and wanted something a little less....hmm specialized when it comes to blade design....

hey XionGlydius,
I have a MiniGrip which is a very good knife...the 154cm steel and factory edge is impressively sharp....I've never held a BM 530 so I can't comment on it....other than that I don't think it looks all that sheeple friendly
If you like lightweight thin knives, you might wanna check into a Kershaw Leek, NRG (small one) or maybe this Spyderco S which weighs 2 oz and is relatively NKP friendly b/c it's got that "gadgety" look; also the Salt1 or Delica4 you might want to consider ;)

Yea so far I am considering:

Kershaw Leek SV30 Stone washed, G-10. for 70
BM 530 154 CM I believe. for 63
BM 556 154 CM also. for 52
Spyderco Calypso JR ZDP 189. for 70

So this will be a toughie.

Not sure why I am replying to a thread that is six years old - I'm probably talking to myself - but here goes. I have a mini-Grip and just ordered a 530. I feel fairly confident that I will prefer the 530 over the min-Grip as an EDC for the following reasons:

- 530 is lighter and has a thinner handle - those are important factors for me. If I'm going to reach in my pocket for keys or other items, I don't want a bulky knife handle getting in my way. Could I deal with the mini-Grip handle in my pocket? Of course - I'm just talking about preferences.

- I can get all four of my fingers on the 530 handle, versus only three for the mini-Grip. Not a deal-breaker, but I prefer the longer handle (like that of a Delica).

Having said that, I should add that if I were camping or hiking, I would almost certainly prefer to carry the mini-Grip. Why? Because the blade on the mini-Grip is obviously much stronger than the thin spear point on the 530. If I am out in the woods, I expect to be much rougher on a knife than if I am just in the office. Under those conditions, I definitely don't want the knife tip breaking on me.

On the other hand, if I am at home and a knife breaks on me, it's no big deal - I have a whole drawer full of knives. So I am not worried about the strength and durability of the knife.

So for me it's about what conditions in which I am planning to use the knife. In the city, I would prefer the 530 - in the woods, the mini-Grip.
