BM 580 Barrage, I really don't like the scales

Lets start off, I picked up a BM 580 combo edge, with the DLC coating and I really love this knife. I love how it's decently light (in comparison to my zt 0350st), pretty damn rugged, axis-assisted with the ability to lock open and closed, and it comes with a pretty universal steel (154cm), nicely-shaped blade.

ALTHOUGH, I really don't like the scales on this knife.

I can't get over this valox crap for the scales. There's something about it that reminds me too much of the diving knife i used to use out in the ocean. I am in need of something with more texture to the scales, possibly something that feels like the standard, checkered g10.

Any recommendations on where i can find some replacement scales, or ways that i can make these scales feel better (more grippier, if that's even a word)?

You could ask phil dobson or chax to make you a set of g10 scales. Or, and I have not tried this, but I've always thought about filling the holes on the underside of the scales with epoxy or the mixture used to bed a rifle action.

I returned a new Barrage last year because of the chintzy handles. Had I known about people who made G-10 slabs I'd have kept it. The Axis-Assist is smokin' fast but the grips were a dealbreaker for me.

Now, the Barrage is discontinued right? All I saw in the new BM catalog was the more subdued Nitrous assist knives...hmm...have to go find that and look.

I am also displeased with the sheer flimsyness of the handles of my recently acquired Benchmade Barrage.
Also, the strange shape of the rear of the handle is not in my taste, possibly because of my small hands.

I am quite pleased with the blade and locking mechanism, although it seems to have slight vertical play for some reason.

You could buy the new Benchmade 583-1 WARN and swap the scales . The 583-1 is tanto blade with g-10 scales. Or you might call benchmade and see if they will just sell ya the 583 scales.

I know this is an old thread, but I think it's better to post here than to start a new one.

the scalex for the 580 has a really cheap feel to them. I should have done more research before buying it, but I had the impression that benchmade knives would be better than what the 580 is. mine also has some up and down bladeplay.

The 580 is the only BM I have owned and immediately did not like. The handles feel cheap, but I can get over that (the griptilian is a great knife). My problem is the combination of no grip, and strong assist. That knife would pop out of my hands when I opened it unless I had a death grip on it. After the second time it flew out of my hand and across the room on opening, I decided to return it. A/O knives need some traction, or they are just flat out dangerous.

at least the barrage has full metal liners.

the griptillian is all plastic with a half a popsicle stick of metal in the center.

I had the same experience. I hate, HATE the cheap plastic handle scales. And yes they are cheap plastic. Smooth as glass.
