BM 710 vs. Pocket Hobbit vs. Chinook ????

Benchmade's M2 will be both stronger and tougher than Spyderco's 440V. For light use, depending on who you believe, BM's M2 either will or will not hold an edge as well as S's 440V, but I expect them to be solidly in the same ballpark regardless. For heavier use, where strength and toughness come into play, I'd put my money on M2 for edgeholding.

440V is stainless. M2 is not, and is always coated with B%2, or whatever Benchmade is calling their coating this year.

The BM 710 in M-2 is about as good as it gets for all around EDC purposes IMHO. It has many positive features like an ambidexterous lock, a near perfect working blade shape, a steel which holds a wicked edge for a long time, a comfortable handle and a fairly non-agressive look overall. Be sure to spring the extra $$ for the M-2 steel. Benchmade has got the heat treat for this steel down cold IMO. Mine does not stain or rust, does not chip and holds that bad-ass edge tenaciously.

The Chinook is an awe inspiring folder if your used to the weight of say a Sifu or Carnivour. It has a bit of weight but has been a very good second choice for me when I feel like letting the Sifu rest a little. It too holds a great wicked edge and works sufficiently well as an EDC. Not quite as Sheeple friendly as the 710 in appearance, but that is kind of subjective anyway.
Different people react differently to different knives.
Which brings to mind the fact that I'm kind of surprised the 8" chef's knife has not been outlawed in this country because it is obviously the knife of choice for all the killers one sees in the movies.

Note the Chinook is a lockback -- a magnificently strong and beefy lockback at that -- not a liner lock. For me, being a liner lock would have knocked it right out of contention.

I'd agree that the Carnivour is the REKAT I'd most consider for EDC (or rather, it used to be; they seem to have a new rendition of the Pioneer out that looks more interesting for EDC). My problem with the Carnivour vs. the Benchmade 710: The Carnivour has a smaller blade, stuck into a bigger heavier package with a bigger footprint, so you get less knife and worse carryability. The handle is way less comfortable fo r extended use. In addition, the Carnivour is famous for gritty action. For those reasons, I come down solidly on the side of the 710. However, for straight-up defensive carry, the Carnivour's handle is supremely secure; not that the 710 is insecure, but the Carnivour stays in your hand even more solidly.

My only beef with the M-2 710 is that $hitty coating.

Of the knives mentioned I would readily choose the 710 for EDC. The Chinook is awesome, but as mentioned above pretty darn heavy.

Thankfully there is the Wegner.

I have a Pocket Hobbit and BM 710. The BM would be my choice for an EDC as the PH is heavy and has been already stated, could attract unwanted attention from the curious. You might also consider the Al Mar SERE 2000. This too could be an excellent EDC. Workmanship is outstanding and while it is hefty, it may not be too heavy for an EDC.

Slam Dunk: I'm with Talmadge & Misque and the other 710 advocates. I own 3 of the 710's. That is my "work force", along with a couple AFCK's.

Ahhh... the Pocket Hobbit... I can't even look at the Pocket Hobbit without laughing an internal laugh. It is so over-the-top :barf:, and so gee-whiz, I just find it kind of a joke. YMMV. At great risk of offending someone's sensibilities ( ), it's for armchair commando's, IMO, and not my idea of discrete, utilitarian, practical, justifiable, or necessary.

(hope you enjoyed my overuse of emoticons!)

I haven't handled a Chinook, but I'm not a fan of upswept blades myself, much preferring a dropped point, spear point, or semi skinner, or at LEAST a straight clipped point. I suspect the Chinook is pretty rugged from the looks/comments/dimensions/designer/intent, but it's not for me.

As much as I love the Chinook, I'd have to agree with the folks who voted for the 710. For EDC it's got to be just easier to haul around, heck, I had a sheath made for my Chinook, so it would work better for me. For some strange reason though, I have never owned a 710 ! (?)
I guess there are so many things on my list that the 710 must have slipped off the edge of the paper!! Maybe it's time to hit the trade forum.

over the top? Maybe. But there is no folder that opens that fast (maybe the commander). If you wear an open shirt over an undershirt, concealment is easy too. If I had to pick a folding knife to fight with, I'd pick the pocket hobbit. Solid, fast, proven design (an extension of the al-mar warrior, gjian warrior, hobbit warrior concept). Having said that the 710 is way easier to carry, and the PH is NOT a utility knife.
