BM 732 Ares Questions

Gorgeous Knife, I carry one as part of my rotating EDC, it's quick, extremely well balanced, tough, accommodates many grip styles and for the money one nice knife.

BTW I used mine hard for two years, snapping it open hudreds of times a day, the Omega springs never failed.

Keep it clean, keep it dry and it will serve you well.

I'd like to add that my knife was a 730 Ares, essentially the same knife without the coating.

The Ares is one of Benchmade's first generation of Axis lock knives.

The handle ergos are excellent. The little "peak" in the middle of the handle helps anchor the knife in hand, both in a forward or drawing motion.

There are two negative issues I see with this knife. First, it mostly was released in a black blade coating. Some folks don't care for the look of the coating after it's been used. The second, more major issue, is the knife has been discontinued by the manufacturer. :(

If you're interested, grab one while you can.

I've always considered it one of BM's best overall designs. Alan Elishewitz is one of the best! Grab it before they're gone.

The Ares that I am interested in is the one with the plain edge and satin finish. I know where I can find a new one for sale, so availability is not an issue at the moment.

How does the "machining" in the G-10 handle look in person compared to knives with flat G-10 handles? Does it look too fancy or is it well done?

Thanks again,
Tom

How the handle on the plain black G10 Ares looks really is a matter of opinion. How the handle feels in hand is also a matter of opinion.

My opinion on both? Beautiful!

It's fairly subtle, but makes the handle feel thinner than it actually is -- more oval in section, rather than rectangular like every other G10-slabbed tactical out there. Makes for excellent ergonomics overall.

I have two of them, a 730S (the original purple & black handle, no blade coating) and 735 (green & black handle, no blade coating), and the 735 is a fixture in my EDC rotation. Definitley one of Benchmade's best.

The 730 is a very good knife, a lot better than the 551. Alas, it is also more expensive, but I think it's worth it.

I got a 730BT not long ago. I find that it fits my hand better than any other Benchmade that I own, eg. 705, 710, 940, 420, 670. Size of the handle and the blade is just perfect. In fact, I like it so much that I have just ordered another so that I have a user and a keeper.

Just a heads up, Knifeworks is having a good deal on these, got mine from them. Take a look, good price but limited numbers http://www.knifeworks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=196

Yes that is a beaut...
I really miss mine.
It was green and black handle with a plain edge. Pretty similar to that one.
My first axis lock.
Never a problem with it.

The handle scales are smooth to my thinking, the sculptings are well placed and quite ergonomic. The hand loves the Ares handle.
Its easy to orient by feel and changes grips well.
The blade is an appleseed grind, good tactical but if the knife has a weakness its in food prep.
I didn't find that it was particularly dextrous in food prep and thats one of the main things I use an EDC for. I need another one some time for gp.

I'm thinking its the curse of the Green Benchmade.
I always get them, and then end up giving them away to friends.
They always appreciate them, but dammit I need a small green Benchmade to stay in the collection for a while!

That is because they come with really thick edges. If you reprofile the blade and thin that edge out they cut crazy.

This is my favorite knife .....it is the knife that got me started buying higher end folders.

In fact I am picking up two more Black G10 plain satin blade knives...they were a real Internet score! I only have one more to find.... Still need a Ares with the M2 Steal.

Just get one.

I lusted after one for almost a year, snagged a 732 here months and months ago...

And it's still in my pocket as I type this. It's THE knife for me.

Just get one. :D

I really like them myself very simple blade design and a nice feeling handle, everything about it screams edc. Not flashy but very good useful knife in my own opions.

Dang, you guys are good salesmen! :D

The one, small flaw I noticed on the Ares (that I have an option to buy) is that the center grind line doesn't come out and meet the point of the blade. It ends nearly 1/8" too high. Is that common on this model? Not that it's a big deal, but for a BM, I was a little surprised to see they missed that much. It's very obvious and doesn't look the best.

I've had my Ares since they first came out. My favorite all time Benchmade.

TAH, Thats they way the blade is ground.:D

Thanks Byrom. Are they ground that way for added strength at the tip? I've never seen a blade ground that way.
