BM 940 alternatives?

Out of curiosity, what is it about spyderco in the pocket that bothers you? As above, the ZT 0450 is a good option, but has a 3.25” blade if you dont mind. Another option would be the new ZT 0609 which has a 3.4” blade you’re looking for and weighs only a bit more than a 940

H Henry Noble I've never had any vertical play in any axis lock. I'd send it back to BM and insist they either fix or replace it. Side to side play is a balancing act, but vertical play shouldn't exist.

Their warranty department has always been pleasant to deal with though. I'm sure they'll sort you out. If you run into any issues try reaching out to Jason @Benchmade here on the forum. He's been super helpful since joining.

they're like the Samsung note 8 so useful with quality features and good build quality but so bad to keep in a back pocket
This is funny. I actually have a Note 8 in my front right pocket and a Spyderco Military in my back right. They are enormous and awesome!:D

Maybe I’m just an odd ball but I carry a pm2 in my front pocket often and it never feels too big, I usually don’t even notice it.
That's me. In the past I often threw my similar sized knife into my back pocket for the bike commute home from work. Since I got the last Para2 that I have carried the most of all my Paras I just keep it in my right front and never notice it (legs often at 100rpm) . . . so . . . yeah . . . what's not to like.

The reason I stopped putting it in my back pocket was that I had my jacket (fairly close fitting) snag on the pocket clip a couple of times and I thought if there was even the slightest chance I would loose the knife that way I would put up with front pocket carry to prevent loss of the knife. So far there is nothing to put up with I just don't feel the knife.

(If I lost my Para 2 in M4 I would have to be institutionalized for the trauma until I got another. Not worth taking the slightest risk)

Granted it's not the same sort of knife as the 940. The 940 is even less obtrusive for a gentleman's largish bladed knife; I get that.

This ^
Heck I didn't even notice my old 1980's 110 had side to side play until some one here mentioned theirs did and I went and checked mine. I could do without an iffy lockup though. ;) :(

That sucks, but I find it hard to believe it's common. I have three 940 series knives currently, and have owned at least two others previously, and have never had one with up and down blade play. As far as side to side play goes, it's the usual Benchmade axis lock knife conundrum of trying to get it tight enough so the side to side is barely noticeable, without going a hair tighter and getting the knife to the point it's too hard to operate.

I just pulled out and tried all three of mine and none of them have an iota of up and down play, and I can't imagine how they could unless you loosened the pivot until the blade was free swinging or something. Are your pivot screws reasonably tight?

I second this. I own the PJ 940 (S30V, unncoated green aluminum handles) and I've tuned it to have a free action. While there is some side to side blade play, I don't have any vertical blade play. Fwiw, my other AXIS lock Benchmades are all the same; no vertical play with varying degrees of horizontal play (7 others if iirc). Ymmv.

Hey guys I have a 940bk (anodized aluminum scales) that I love except the manufacturing tolerances. I even went through the trouble of going to a physical Benchmade dealer to sort through and find one without blade play but a week or so later it developed a metric shit tone of up and down blade play, I sent it in to BM and they sent it back with the same problem (its a tolerance issue of either the diameter of the lock bar not being enough, to much space in the liner allowing lock bar up and down travel, or the locking ramp portion of the blade blank)(push down on open blade clicking noise comes from the axis lock and a bunch of play) any who is there any alternative in a similar price range that keeps my fingers out of the way of a closing blade, has a similar weight, doesnt look overly tacticool, and comes with generally good tolerances?

Compression lock and ball bearing lock from spyderco keep your fingers out of the way. So does backlocks.

Going to be hard to replace the fun factor of a 940. Kind of in a league of its own. Great figgit knife and a legend for a reason. Get a CF 940-1. Great knife and lighter fun toy

my only problem with Spyderco is they're so damn good in the hand but so damn annoying in the pocket where it spends most of its time. like i get that the Spyderco opening hole is an amazing opening system, but damn change it up a bit. I just need it to not suck to carry it around, hell most of my uses for a pocket knife day to day don't even involve the edge portion
The Spyderco Southard is very similar in shape/profile to the 940. However, your finger will be in the way of a closing blade, which you stated you don't prefer.

Been carrying the Steel Will Mini Intrigue. It bears some similarity to the 940. Slim carry. It's a really nice EDC.
