I am looking for another Benchmade to add to my collection and have decided on either a 960 in red or the 940. I'm looking for opinions on which to get because they are so close in design.

Thanks in advance.

The blade shape is what gives the edge to the 940, atleast for my uses. Can't go wrong with either, have you considered the 930? Good luck with a tough choice.

I have looked at the 930 but part of the reason I have decided on the 940/960 is they are very slim (very little pocket space taken up) and I really like the scale material. Thanks for the speedy reply though.

I had a 960, a real beauty but just couldn't quite find a comfortable and secure feeling grip.

The 940 on the other hand looks awesome and feels awesome. Get the 940!

That is not the first time that I have heard that about the 960. Hmm kinda leaning towards the 940. The other thing that I was thinking is the blade steel does the D2 make that much of a difference?

The 960 was too small for my hands to be comfortable, as were the 705 and the Spyderco Delica (all 3" blades with no finger choil). The 940 however is as close to the perfect knife as I've found for myself. And the S30V steel is excellent.

I’ve got medium sized hands and the 960 fit me just fine in normal cutting tasks. The handle wouldn’t be comfortable in prolonged cutting but I don’t think prolonged heavy cutting was what they had in mind when they designed the knife.

Definitely no prolonged cutting just your normal EDC type of stuff. Although with the D2 I don't have any doubts that the blade could hold up under relatively heavy use.

I’ve had several 960’s I just sold the only one I have right now. But if history can be used as a gueid I’ll have another.

The 940 and the 960 are actually very different knives with very different feels in hand and in pocket. The 960 certainly has a feel of elegance about it. Combine that with a d2/axis lock work ethic and you’ve got a rather interesting knife. The 940 is also one of my favorite knives of all time. You really cant go wrong with either knife.
