I am either going to get a BM 710HS(BT2 coating, M2 steel) or a BM AFCK 2(BT2 coating, M2 steel) and I can't decide which one to get. I like the 710 because of the lock, but I like the AFCK 2 because of the blade style.

Thanks!!

I like the AFCK as well, but I have to say go with the 710. The Axis lock is much better, stronger, and smoother than a liner-lock.

Get the 710.
It's a little less threattening to the sheeple.
For me, the handle on the 710 was easier to hold in different positions because it doesn't have that finger recess.
The finger recess is good though if you're buying it for self defense or most of your cutting consists of slicing/pulling motions.
You'll love the Axis lock and that in itself makes the 710 worth getting over the AFCK IMHO.

I think you'll find both knives to be very well-regarded around here. All things considered, I'd go with the 710. The Axis lock puts it a notch above, IMO.

i love my AFCK, and dont think ya can beat them for the $$ while www.newgraham.com has the AFCK ya mentioned for about $85 - i just like the AFCK ergos and blade shape, and it fits my hand well.....nothing wrong w/the other one either, i just happen to like the AFCK

I like the AFCK handle a lot, and I don't like the 710 handle so much. And I find the liner- lock slightly easier to operate one-handed, although the Axis lock is stronger. Also, an M2 AFCK costs almost 1/2 of a M2 710, if price is an object.

I've owned both (well, actually, my 710 isn't the M2 version, but ...), and I would recommend the 710. For one thing, it just fits my hand better; but also, my distrust of liner-locks has grown over the last few years, and with the advent of the Axis lock, I doubt I'll ever buy another liner-lock.

However, I am not the world's greatest sharpener, and while in theory I prefer the recurved blade, in real life it makes things more difficult. I keep reading Joe Talmadge's sharpening tip page (I'll edit this reply to post the url when I find it), but I'm still not doing something right. I look forward to having enough time to attend a blade show and get an in-person tutorial!

I love both knives. It would be a more difficult question for me if the AFCK were an axis lock. But in comparing a superlative liner lock to a superlative axis lock, axis lock definitely wins for me. An axis-lock AFCK would make it a serious horse race. The 710 is more carryable, but for me, the blade shape and ergonomics of the AFCK are unbeatable.

I'm a recurve fan, especially if it's gentle. I also like the axis lock, but the blade shap and the eronomics of the AFCK are hard to beat. Having owned both I can say this, either is a good knife but the fit, finish and overall quality of the 710 seemed to be better. Perhaps this as an issue with vintage as BM seems to be trying these days. The AFCK appears to be more bang for the buck; if that's an issue.

710. The Axis cannot be beat. As for one-handed operation, I find the 710 easier to close than any linerlock knife. You never need to have your fingers in the path of the blade, and you can flip it closed or close it conventionally.

Hmmm, I own a 710 in M2 (247-400) and a 812 AFCK in M2, I also owned a 800 AFCK in M2.

Now the AFCK series have very good ergonomics are very lightweight and I love the blades shape and style (AFCK AXIS P L E A S E!!!)

However the 710 is a far superiour knife.

The AFCK series suffer from blade play, liner scraping and the blade coming out of true. The scale flex is slightly annoying as well.

These are very minor problems to many people or not a worry at all, however in a $100+ knife it is unacceptable IMHO. I traded the 800 and bought the 812 as it was the only way to get a small knife in M2. Given the choice I would have bought ANY other knife in that size with M2 over the 812, oh and the new blade hole looks rubbish to my eyes. The old Spyderhole is more to my taste.

I love the AFCK and wouldn't be without one (OK, two or three!) and feel some loyalty to the design I've carried so much. With that said, you simply can't beat the Axis lock. I own four axis locks, and will buy more axis models, but probably not anymore liner locks. Why can't we get an Axis AFCK?

If money is not an issue get the 710, and get it in M2 steel. If money is an issue, follows SIFU1A's advice and go to the website. There is just no sense in buying an AFCK2 when you can get the same knife with a round hole for much less.

Jeff,
Seems you are in the trap, man :D
I'm sure earlier or later you will have both knives.
Here are just some my preferences:
* I like AFCK handle shape over 710 one,
* I like SpyderHole over opening studs,
* I like tip-down (AFCK) carry mode over tip-up (710),
* I like Axis Lock over Liner Lock.

710 has also significantly stiffer handle, AFCK one with Ti liners is a bit too flexible. AFCK is lighter though have a bit longer handle.
Conclusion: since I'm pretty lazy and comfort-loving man I'm going with AFCK much more frequently.
Side concern what is not important for me but may be quite important for someone else. 710 has the part of the edge recurved what can cause some sharpening difficulties if you don't have proper sharpening tools or/and enough experience, but AFCK doesn't.

I have both and I like the 710 better just think that it is made better that the AFCK and feels better in the hand opens and closes easyer and a better looking knife.

Aww, come on Jefro. Call the shot. Pull the trigger.

Both are great. Buy both used and sell the one you don't like.

you guys must have forgot that since I'm 13 I don't have unlimited fumds for knives:(

Hey, Jeff, you've gotten a lot of good advice here, but ultimately the choice is yours. I don't own either of the knives you are thinking about buying, but the 710HS is definitely on my list to buy. I do have the 942, which is also an axis lock design like the 710. In my opinion, there is no comparison between an axis and a liner lock. The lock is only one component of a knife, and you should not base your decision solely on lock style, but personally, I don't think I will ever by another liner lock. If you are really set on the design of the AFCK, then I would go with that, but otherwise, go with the 710-- I think you will be amazed with the axis. You should do searches in the current blade discussion and knife review forums as well as the archives for "axis" and "liner lock" before you make your decision. Good luck, and let us know what you decide.
