BM AFCK or BM 710??

Faced this dilemma myself, and went with the 710 in M2 steel for $35 bucks more. Handle is about 1/2 in shorter (I think) and Axis lock rules.

However, the fine banana shape of the AFCK cannot be beat for thrusting and cutting. 710 isn't that much more sheeple friendly in M2, though, because of the long lean lines. Nor is the 710 as ergonomic as the AFCK.

You have a ton of replies.

You've got one tough-ass decision here Jeff.
Here's my take on it:

Since I have three AFCK's (1 LH version, 1 in ATS-34 and 1 in M-2) and two 710's (1 in M-2 and 1 in ATS-34) I just wanna say:
WAAAHHHH!! I WANT AN AXIS AFCK!! AND I WANT IT NOW!!

The AFCK is a classic. The blade shape is really multi-purpose. As an every day utility piece it is a stand out. As a self defense blade it's as mean as an alley cat. It has a feel that I just have not been able to find in other folders. Some say it has a "boxy" feel to it. And I kinda agree with them. But at the same time, that grip fills the hand, protects the fingers, and is comfortable to hold and use and play with.
That being said:

I think you should try out the 710 in M-2HSS. Spring for the extra $$ and get the M-2 steel.
When you couple the 710's sexy recurved blade with Joe Talmadge's sharpening advice on how to make the Axis perform, you have what is possibly one of the best folders from a factory that money can buy IMNSHO.:) The 710 as a user absolutely ROCKS! My one and only pet peeve is that it is tip-up carry. That is a minor glitch at best.

The Axis Lock puts the 710 in a whole other catagory above the AFCK. The idea of a blade lock that "wears in, not out" is sheer genius. Don't even get me started about the ease of operation of the Axis Lock.
That's why I (and many others) want to see an Axis AFCK. If that lock (and possibly that 710 blade) were put on an AFCK frame, a good many folder fanatics would experience knife-Nirvana. At least I would.:D

Jeff, I have both the knives you mentioned. I like the smaller AFCK more than the larger version. Ya' can't beat the Axis lock! Eventually you'll own both knives - that's just the way it is. IMHO, start with the 710, you won't be dissapointed.

Based on the BM710 opinions I've read time-and-again, I've nearly bought one a couple times.

The problem is that here in Colorado, anything with a blade >3.6" is a "concealed weapon" and therefore illegal for me to carry.

I'm frankly surprised this isn't an issue elsewhere as well.

I'll likely go with a BM705 with the 2.95" blade. Wish they offered in in about a 3.5" version (BM707.5?)

Mike
