i'm thinking of buying a mini axis and wondered what some of your opinions are on this model...thanx

I own both an Axis (large) and a Stryker (large) and this may just be my opinion, but I really like the stryker more

I mean the axis is a great devic and all but im still getting used to the fact of a new locking device

I still am stuck to my liner locks...

Well but anyway it is a great kinife and YOU WILL NOT be disapointed trust me it is great

hope this helps.....

I've played with an axis-lock before, and I think they are great. However, I'm waiting for the Elishewitz Ares based BM Axis model to come out. The current axis model is still pretty nice, but I've always liked Elishewitz designs better.

my first folder (sine I am a newbie) is the full sized 710 axis, and I believe it is the sexiest BM out there. However the stryker feels beetter in the hand.. (wow the feeling) too bad I am not a tanto person.

i love my mini-Axis. it's 1/2 serrated; black blade. nice knife. unfortunately, one of my bosses is a sheeple and saw the clip. when she saw the black blade she threw a fit. it's ok by her if i have a small knife as long as it's not a black blade!! what the heck do these people think? so Shawn, i'll be selling mine really soon, cause i have to carry a different knife at work. it's brand new out of the box, twice taken to work and never used to cut anything. my loss will be someone else's gain. *Sigh* BTW, no matter where you get one, they're smooooth and strong!

kelt...i would be interested but i am looking to buy a plain edge....thanx for the offer though! and sniperboy...i'm not a tanto man myself....lol. so what about the dark star? i also like the liner locks and don't know how i would like this new lock on the axis......

Great knife, great size, great blade, great price... well, you get the idea. Still my favorite but far from my most expensive.

a kindred spirit. As an engineer I think that 'american tantoes' as these modified tantoes are called are GREAT innovations. However my purist side refuses to like anything other than a real jap tanto.

Too bad the Axis lock handle doesn't feel as good as the stryker.

I have had the privellage of holding a dark star. kinda nice blade but I really prefer the 710 recurved blades.

THe dark star didnt feel AS good in my hand which is surprising since they (DS and stryker) are designed both by Elishewitz.

If you share the same interests as me (curved blade plain edge no black) then here is what I chose from:

Rekat Carnivore
Emerson Commander
710
AFCK

After 'test driving' all of em (except the carnivore which I will eventually get) I chose the 710. For nothing more than 'instinct'

the emerson commander seemed to have a weird looking 'kriss wanna be blade' the afck felt kinda long but i might get it some day and the carnivore.. didnt hold it. The full sized 710 just felt right.

However if you KNOW you want a BM (my first folder had to be a BM) your best bt would be 710, stryker and afck. since we both know stryker aint the blade for us I chose the 710.

a mass of opinions, but hey they say that the axis is a pretty strong lock. and all that good techie stuff.. I liked it better than a liner. but then again i am not part of the old school

sniperboy...i held a dark star at a recent show and it wasn't bad, i didn't hold the 710 though which just looks like it would feel better, i bought a 750 which i like alot and now want something a little smaller...mini axis will be my choice, thanx for the input

Well I didn't say that the Darkstar was BAD... ^_^;; It is ofcourse all relative. I was comparing it to the 710.

if you havent own an axis lock you should get one in my opinion. =). the perdue 720 wassit isa nice one too but a 710 or 705 is a must have in my opinion =1.

Axis is my fave 4"-bladed folding knife out there, period. Recurved blade gives incredible performance once you thin the edges down. The Axis lock is head and shoulders above the liner lock in general, in my opinion. I agree that the Axis's handle doesn't quite have the feel of the Stryker's handle -- but the Axis remains probably the most comfortable handle I've ever used for long-term use.

I, too, am looking forward to the Ares Axis.

I also have the Mel Pardue Axis, with the 3.25" blade. Just incredible. If you're thinking about a smaller blade, this is hard to beat.

Joe

The 705 is a great small knife which still has a substantial handle so you don't feel like you are working with a toy. The 710 is a serious large folder retaining a high degree of elegance.
My personal favorite is the 720 Mel Pardue. It's solid aluminum handles with internal liners make this the most rigid folder I have ever seen, and it's mid size seems perfect to me.

RE: the lock mechinism, I have subjected this thing to all kinds of conditions trying to find a weakness, and so far it has kicked my butt. I dropped it into a wheelbarrow full of concrete thinking that debris in the lock might cause it to fail like a liner lock can, ........nope! I fished it out, opened it to a perfect lock up without even shaking off the globs of concrete. I dipped it back in, then closed it and after the blade squished the concrete out of the way it was fully closed. I have put the blade in a vise and put nearly all of my weight on the handle without failure. One famous custom knife maker told me that he was sure that if I oiled it up real good and gave it the spine whack test it would fail so I tried, and tried and finally gave up. Some think it will wear out because the locking axle doesn't have very much travel left after locking up but I have one which I have snapped open as hard as I can hundreds if not thousands of times and I see NO wear at all in the lock.

Enough rambling, Try the Axis, it won't dissapoint you!

Great!

Shawn, a 705 may be small for the hand?
Having a small AFCK, I think it is.

spiderboy has me wanting a 710 for Christmas...or after,

Then Joe has me wishing for a 720,

Rick and Felix has me now thinking 730...

Thanks for the info peoples...

Edgeman.. a BM _ENGINEER_ wwoooaah duuuude I bow befre thee ^_^. Are you sure you should be telling us trade secrets?

that 730 sounds tempting.. I might 'reasses' my opinion about non traditional tantoes.

all in all 710 is the blade. You can't go wrong (again opinions) a 720 is a 'cuter' version ^_^. I would buy a 720 only if i had a 710 already. (which i do.. but have too many on my folder list

Edgeman, any idea when the ares axis will be available?

I am hoping that a few aluminium handled 730s make it out the door as well. That would shelve the 720 for sure.

I have been carrying a Mini Axis for a few months now. I use it at work and at home. I have been carrying a pocket knife for about 25 years. The axis is on my very short list of favorites. If it had a BG42 blade and was flat ground from 1/8 or 3/32 inch stock, it would be my favorite. Very sturdy, reasonably sharp, fit and finnish top notch. I hope the omega shaped springs will hold up for a decade or two.

Danny

While we're on the subject of the Axis, what is the proper sharpeing angle? 25 degrees?

Thanks,
Art

I have not bought any folders but Spyderco since the late 1980s, but I am awaiting delivery on a Pardue Axis 720. It appears to be a wonderful little knife (little when compared to a Carnivour or a Military). When I get it I will be posting more on it. Keep looking for more news from a former confirmed Spydie Nut.

The 710 is the only real folder I have, and it is great. Only problem is sharpening the recurved blade, but after a little practice, it's no big deal.
