BM Axis lock question

If you use your axis lock button when you open it instead of thumbstud. A lot of people do and once one breaks the other goes fast. It took 10 years of playing with a 710 to break. I would highly recommend the lock. Side note Benchmade usually won't send out parts.

I've had problems with rust inside the 940s, 943s, and 710s. The lock plates, the Omega springs, the sliding bar, and the stop pin all get rusty. I can wire brush the offending parts and get get the knives working just fine, but I wish they would use more corrosion resistant materials internally. I also wish they would sell small parts. Cleaning Omega springs is a pain in the butt job. I have never broken an Omega spring. I love the utility of a properly working Axis lock (one handed in both directions).

Been carrying a 710 and 806 for years. Never a failure, and no broken springs. My wife sports a Mini Griptilian in her purse which also locks up like day one and has never failed or broken a spring. Each has been flipped thousands upon thousands of times, so I'm very confident in the AXIS lock mechanism. I doubt I'll ever buy another Benchmade again, but these have held up so well I'll probably never have to.

All of them?!

yes unfortunately but benchmades warranty department fixed it for me and it took a good 6 months of edc before they broke/failed on me. Im not dissing the axis lock i love it but i cant offord to send it in every six months that it breaks. I thought maybe i had a fluke griptillian so i bought another and that one snapped in just under 5 months i believe. I have also had a few more knives with the axis lock mechanism from benchmade fail. So i decided to sell all my axis lock knives about 4 in all and bought TI framelocks :D i guess its personal preference though.

also another side note, i live in maryland and it was very humid and hot the summer i carried most of these axis lock knives. maybe that had to do with the weakening of the springs. Its seems alot of people here dont have any issues but the climate could be a factor. Just stating my experience with them.

You, my friend, are one unlucky fellow! If that had happened to me I would also be turned off to the Axis Lock.

I've had a bunch of Axis locks, going all the way back to when the 710 first came out. None of them have ever failed. They all were carried and flipped countless times without any snapped springs. I've read that piano wire is an excellent substitute for the Omega springs, and you don't have to send it off to BM for that!

To the OP, the large Bone Collector is one of my favorite folders. It is a great edc!

This is quite impressive.

They do send springs out - I have couple of spares from BM.

They don't send them out to people in the US, just people overseas where the cost of shipping is prohibitive.

And if every AXIS lock knife you own has a broken spring then you must have the worlds worst luck or one knife.

I'm still not convinced it is nearly as big an issue as it is made out to be. I searched the forums a while back and found many people talk about the possibility of them breaking but the amount of people that claim it has happened to them is fairly small, between 30 and 40 people. Many of the same people mentioned it happened to them in multiple threads which makes it seem more common than it is. Even if that is a fraction of the amount of people it has happened to, out of the millions of AXIS lock knives the chance of one breaking is probably statistically close to zero.

I personally think the AXIS lock is the best knife lock out there. I have one in my pocket every single day. I am one of the people that had one break and I had a new one made in less than 10 minutes out of a piece of MIG welding wire. I can fix that myself but I can't fix a worn out liner/ frame lock so I will take the one I can fix at home. And I've had problems with a few liner/ frame locks and that is a lock type I try to stay away from. Which is good since most custom makers use a frame lock. My wallet likes it at least. When the patent runs out on the AXIS lock I might be in trouble though. Only 5 or 6 years probably unless there is an extension.

9 years with Mini Griptilian 555 without any problems. Not sayin that they never break but if you asked here if anybody ever saw the Brooklyn bridge fall down a few would say yea.

mine broke in about a year.

A year with my mini-grip and no problems. Still as solid as day one, and my favorite lock overall, though my Manix 2 is a close second.

I hope it stays that way...
