soo... ive got the april BLADE in font of me.

pg 14 there's an ad for the Dejavoo. and the tag line is:

"life and death decisions are often made at the cash register."

 huh ???

what does that even mean?
i dont really percieve this knife as an SD knife, so im confustigated:confused:

That's a big knife with a $160 msrp. Features a 3.95 in. blade of S30V steel, and a 5.17 in. contoured 3D G-10 handle. Mabe their saying, don't be cheep when your life is going to be on the line?

I'm pretty sure it mean that sometimes cash registers can be life threatening.

I really don't like it when companies market their knives
using that type of advertising. It's sort of silly.
Maybe good for mall ninjas, but it turns me off.
I love BM and I really think they don't need to start lowering
themselves down to the Dark Ops level. At least they didn't use
the word 'deanimate.'

Oh I don;t think Benchmade's lowering themselves at all. They've always advertised with one-liners like that, and..... in this case, it's true - life and death decisions are often made at the cash register. I even think BM considered that light-hearted people like Ignoramus and zenheretic, et al, would come up with some humorous reasons as to why their statement might be true. But seriously, DG2244 has it right, in my opinion.

Look at BM's mission statement: "Make it cool, make it solid, make it happen"
They're just being themselves.....
:D

yeah, while zen's idea is closest to the one I first had :), it probably means that decisions made in a life or death situation are first influenced by the gear you pack.

As a professional writer (OK, a hack), I get a chuckle out of some of Benchmade's ad and catalogue copy, but that's OK. BM makes great knives IMHO.

It was good (or bad) enough to make each of us give up 30 seconds of our lives talking about their product. Which I think is a nice looking piece of knife to boot.

It doesn't have to be an SD situation for your life to be on the line.

That being said, it's still hype. But, at least compared to some knife makers BM's retoric is polite. They may promote their own knife with some hype, but they don't rip on other companies. It could be worse.

A survival knife can be a life or death situation,
but besides that, how is this knife not good for SD?, it seems to be better than average, IMO. It is pointy, has a good grip, etc.

Many of BM's ads are truly tongue-in-cheek and I find they can give me a laugh (in a good way). Surely that ad means that buying a POS-quality knife instead of a good (i.e., the aforementioned BM) knife, can mean the difference in such a situation that calls for a quality tool. You don't want some piece of junk with a blade like sharpened soap or that will fail on you when you need it most.

you guys are totally right. seems like i wasnt thinking creatively.

this little tidbit of insight just made me want to clip the ad and tack it on my wall.

If you happen to be walking in a dark alley at night, a survival knife can be the the ultimate reason for living or meeting your maker. Laugh if you like but in the most unlikeliest of circumstances the knife you carry can determine your future. But always remember, never bring a knife to a gunfight! :D Get that carry permit first, a good SD knife comes second.

before we open that can of worms, id like to point out that the dejavoo diddnt look like an SD because of the linerlock. (not that they cant be, but it just seems now a days i wouldnt think they would make SDs with linerlocks since there are more dependable locks nowadays)

I agree with you there, but Benchmade has a pretty good record of making high quality liner locks. The same is true of Spyderco. Remember.... A manufacturer of any lock is never going to admit that it is a weak lock!
Also, linerlocks have gotten thicker as the demand for thicker liners has increase exponentially over the past few years.

In thier catalog they explicitly tell you this knife is made of only premium components and they list them(to long to list here). The liners are titanium so I can't see them as a weak link. It's a Bob Lum design and everything about it seems to exude quality. Remember, this is a Benchmade Blue Box,not a Pacific rim knife. I liked the add. so much I preordered the mini version. If they had the BALLS to run that add. the least I can do is buy the knife.
