Looking at a 551 and 556. All things considered. Which is the better EDC?

Either of them. Depends what you will mostly use it for, and what sort of environment you work in.

I've carried a Mini-Grip as my EDC for the last 3 years and it's performed flawlessly, so much so that I bought a 551 too - they are both great knives. The 551 might be too large in some circumstances for a comfortable EDC, but the Mini-Grip will go everywhere. There is little practical difference in cutting ability. The blade on the 551 is a bit longer and the whole knife is a bit chunkier, but it really comes down to your intended use.

So toss a coin.

Or get both.
 
Thanks for your help. I'm still trying to weigh the pros and cons of each. Seems like the 551 would be more comfortable in the hand and the 556 would be more comfortable in the pocket. Decisions! :rolleyes:
 
I wanted something with a spear point blade, and got a Benchmade 551 Grip. I really like it, the shape and grind of the blade, along with the AXIS lock, the zytel handle even feels good. It's just too big for an EDC. Of course, I work in an office, where pointy things aren't allowed, and can't carry at work. So, for my uses, the 551 is too big. I haven't held the 556, so I can't comment on that. What uses are you looking at? Pocket carry would probably necessitate the 556, constant work use might necessitate the 551, which when I carry mine, is usually in my coat pocket, which is more comfortable than my pants pocket.
 
I prefer the 556 for EDC. The full sized Grips are quite chunky for pocket carry.
I usually carry the full sized versions in a belt pouch.
 
My vote is for the mini in any flavor. I have a couple that see a fair amount of pocket carry.
 
I am in the same situation. Trying to decide between the regular Grip and Mini Grip. Also looking at both Ritter Grips. Decisions, decisions!

Maybe if they grew on trees, but I do not have the funds for both of them.
 
I found the 551 nicer when Im camping, and doing camp related chores. But when it comes to every day use the 556 is a bit nicer just to carry around in your pocket.
 
I have a 551 and find it a very comfortable EDC and probably more versatile than a smaller knife.

I have a Bm550 and 556 and my 556 is one of my EDC's. I do carry the 550 when I know I have heavier work - knocking down cardboard boxes, etc. I work in an IT/office environment, so the 556 plus a few others in that 3 inch category fit the ticket for the most part. Because I tend to carry several, I usually do carry one, or have a larger one close (in my Maxpedition) as a "just in case", though. This last little while, it's been my Al Mar SERE 2K, but that's because it's new:D Compared to the 550, it's quite heavy.

As mentioned, just depends on your environment or intended use. Mini-Grip handle is surprisingly comfortable considering it's size.

I bought the 551 after feeling both because the 556 just felt to small in the hand. I dont like when i cant get a full hearted grip on my knife...makes me feel like i dont have complete control.
