BM model 42: Did your blades come sharp?

I was checking out my friends BM 42 and the quality of the knife impressed me except the edge. The blade was sharp, but not sharp the way I like it. I was wondering if anyone out there that has this model has the same problem. Nice enough knife that I will have to buy one or two.

By the way I picked up a Benchmade Bali with the Zamak handle for $20. The knife is used, but still decent, and this puppy is scary sharp now after my edge touch up!

cool, is the BM zamak going to be a user or a collector's piece?

My 42 came sharp but the BM 30s I have came tons sharper out of box.

I would have liked to have rcv'd my 42's a little sharper, but I'm not sweating it, as a couple of light strokes on a fine ceramic rod quickly rectified what I think was maybe a slight over-buffing of the blade edge.

Balisongman,

I'm going to use my BM zamak ( I think model 239S) as a user. When I did some of my training in the Philippines, I used the el-cheapo domestic balis in various fights. I ended up winning, but my balis always were jacked up! A couple snaped blades and a couple of bent handles. They used very thin brass frames on them. Any way, I bought some more just in case. At $6.00 a pop, I could buy as many as I wanted. I still favored my Moro Barong more when the @#$% hits the fan though! The balis were more convenient to carry as a primary arm or as back up to my Barong.

one of the 42's wasn't the sharpest. I quickly changed that though not only did I sharpen the blade, we did the swedge as well. NOw that things one mean blade. trust me almost had to get stitches the other day.

As dull as a meeting at work!

Sharpened it up, didn't do the swedge as I don't need that sort of blade, just yet.

Don't know why some are getting sharp blades and others dull ones.....maybe when the second shift comes on we are seeing the difference in talent at the Benchmade facility?

On the first two, one blade was okay, and one wasn't very sharp at all. The third was the sharpest blade I have ever bought. Shaved my arm hair right out of the box! Either they're getting better or this one is just a fluke.

There is definitely a difference in talent with Benchmades sharpening. I found out while there picking up a knife that had a new blade put on it. Before leaving I noticed it was very dull and went back in. Other office workers inspected it and agreed saying that it needed touched up by "Bill". Minutes later back came the knife, this time hair popping sharp with nice even bevels. After many more purchases and trips to Benchmade I have come to believe I can spot when he has done the job, which is unfortunately not very often. I lucked out on my 42 and think it was his work as again the bevels are perfect and the knife is sharp.

The tip was &%**#$ sharp but the blade was just so so.....Not to change the subject but I got a BM940 Osborne Axis 1st Production model that had the worst sharpening I have ever seen! It looked like it was done on a bench-grinder. I'm going to send pictures of it to Les DeAsis; looked like a 60 grit belt or a brick was used!!!!!!!!!!

Both of mine came sharp........ and I have the scars to prove it.

I did notice that they went dull pretty fast though.

First one, not at all.
Second, much better, but nothing to brag about.

The good news is I emailed Les, and have been in communication with him, Travis and Bill (they guy in charge of sharpening).

I have pointed to several threads discussing QC, sharpness and grinds, as well as poor sheath fit and the molding blem. They are, acording to todays email, "actively working on the edge/bevel issues".

I have to say, its exciting that they have taken the time to respond to my inquiries and are addressing our concerns. Good people, good product. With luck, they'll all be little flippy razors in the next few batches.

Now we need to work on getting a production bowie profile!
