Has anyone tried a benchmade RSK grip with a flint? I know that any knife spine or thumb ridges can spark a flint, but does the RSk create good sparks?

Hey Guys..

Jarl..

First before we answer this you have to Define what you call "flint"

Are you talking about natural flint ot Ferrocerium ??

Sometimes the two are interchanged,, however with a question of this nature to give you an accurate answer, we have to know what you mean by "flint"

If it's Ferro, then Any sharp object scraped against ferro Should produce some amount of sparks,,depending on the object...

If you are talking about Natural flint...

Then it takes a certain steel and certain hardness of steel to produce sparks from natural flint...

If you are using a fire steel/ferro rod/whatever you call it the main thing with spark making is not the fancy steel alloy in the blade, it is how "sharp" the corners are on the back. Imagine the knife being an ice skate and the flint the ice and you will understand what I mean. If the knife back has serrations in any way it only takes more out of the steel but doesnt increase the efficiency. A new fire steel makes less sparks than one that has been used for a while because of the amount of firesteel in contact with the knife.
A cut off hacksaw blade is also very useful.

The corners on the spine of the BM RSK do not make great sparks; too rounded. Use a hacksaw blade or something else to scrape the ferro rod.
