BM42s: Serrated or Plain? Anodized or Plain?

I was just wondering what everyone preferred on their BM42s (the 's' meaning multiple, not the serrated model 42). Serrated or plain edged? Anodized or plain handles?

Personally, I like the look of the anodized handles, but I hear that the colors vary... not that it really matters much to me. But I would really like to get everyone's opinion on whether they like plain edge or serrated edge on their 42s better, mostly because I'm finally about to get one for myself. Right now I'm leaning towards the regular BM42 (plain edge, plain handles).

Wouldn't that depend on what you're using it for?

The serrated blade is better for cutting tough stuff like rope and cardboard, and also does more damage when you have a little accident.

As for looks,(I don't have one) the plain blade makes the whole knife look...smooth.

I probably wouldn't use my 42 for cutting, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't stab anyone with it... so I'm basically looking for everyone's opinions lookwise.

I like the look of the 42as. I do not have any practical reasons.

How many blue balisongs do you see? I haven't seen many thats for sure. If your not sure on which blade edge you want, the comboedge gives you the best of both worlds.

Just my thoughts.

Just bought a 42a (For show #133/500) Judging from the look I don't think that the anodizing would hold out that long.

As soon as I get a collectable#42 I think I will make my ole boy a latchless like someone did on another thread here somewhere.(less the thermal coloration).

I prefer the serrated edge. Granted, you wouldn't want to make many mistakes, but neither would your rose bushes.

The colors in anodized 42s do vary considerably from one to the next. This is part of the charm of this product. Each one is a unique work.

The anodization will wear off. So, that may be a concern for you.

Historically, plain-edged knives have out-performed serrated blades as collectibles. I don't know why this is true.

In a user blade, I like a combo edge. But, in a balisong for manipulation, I prefer plain as serrated edges make nasty cuts if you insert your finger in the wrong place.

My personal favorite is the 42A. But, my carry piece and my two demo pieces are all 42s (again, lower-case S for plural, upper-case S for combo-blade).

whats so painful about serrated cuts? the cuts are just in smaller unconnected parts. my only serrated cut didnt bleed nearly as much as plain edged ones do.

oh well. maybe i have some mutant healing factor or something

and i'm asking for two for christmas: a standard plain edge and an anodized serrated edge

I know a gentleman who is about to offer a NIB BM 42as (I believe #35/500)for $150.00! Have you been that good this year?

I won't mention his name without permission but he is great to do business with.

Hey Sabo

Yeah...I prefer the serrated edge myself, even though the plain edge seem to be the most popular. The serrated edge on the 42 just looks a lot cooler!

According to Dave, the anodization of the BM42A wears out. Sorry since i'm not aware of this, how does it wear out? Does it fade or does it chip? How long before it wears out?

I'm planning on getting a BM42A and i just want to now how long will the abodization last and what would it look like after a few years.

Thanks.

It's a thin layer on the surface - it scratches off. I saw one at a show, and the anodizing was already worn off the area where the latch engages the safe handle, and it had only been out for around half an hour.

Yes, unfortunately the anodizing does wear off/scratch off. You can have it re-anodized or do it your self. You can also thermally oxidized them (that's what I did) I think this will last longer. Hopefully when Benchmade has all of there quality problems worked out the anodized will come in better condition (less scratched and worn) and maybe also last a bit longer.

Oh yeh -- I think I like the plain blade (serrated blades are a pain to sharpen) and I have not had a good chance to see and play with an anodized so for know I will go with plain Ti. handles -- you can always do (color) it your self
