BM806 vs BM710 - Which is Better?

Which is "better" the 806 or the 710? I know it's a matter of opinion and opinions (and why you have the opinion that you have) is what I'm looking for. Size and weight seem to be very similar. the only real difference I can seem to find is the blade shape and type of steel.

Not only do opinions come into play, so do many different circumstances... What do you intend to do with the knife and where? Anyway, IMO, if it came to "tactical" over utility then go for the 806. If you want a good user for your EDC chores go with the 710. Again, that's just my opinion.

Like I said. Opinions (and the reasoning behind them) is exactly what I'm after. I am curious as to what you think makes the 806 better as a tactical/fighting folder?

I'd say the 806 is better as a "tactical" knife because it was designed as such. It's also known as the AFCK, or Advanced Folding Combat Knife. I haven't handled a 710, but judging from photos of it and my personal experience with the 806, the handle seems more secure in the four primary grips on the AFCK. Some dislike the handle, but I have large hands (according to my gloves) and the 806 handle feels like it was made for me.

i vote for the 806, ive had mine for several months now and it never leaves my side and ive done every thing from cooking to stabing threw a truck bed (LONG story) and nothings hurt it yeat.

the only gripe about it is the coating is not as tough as the old coating say on the 800. a buddy has had his 800 sence it was new 8 or so years maby longer and my coating is wore just as bad as his is and ive only been using it for a few months.

no biggie, im planing on sending it off to be recoated in the old coating any way.

I own both models and I honestly can't say one is "better" than the other I.E. construction, quality, etc. It all comes down to one's opinion and which piece suits your uses and which you just like better. I prefer the 806 mainly due to the hole and the finger cutout. But I also carry a 710 here and there as well, usually when the 806 is reserved for defense duty, the 710 rides as utility. If you want a general purpose EDC, the 710 fits nicely. If you want an EDC that can double as a defensive folder, the 806 works that role nicely, mainly, IMO due to the more secure finger guard.

That does make sense about the 806 being a better defensive folder due to the more prominant finger guard.

I've done some pretty hard stabbing drills with both the 806 and the 710. The 710 has grip serrations on the primary handle contact points that do work fairly well IMO, I've slid some when really plowing the 710 into a target, but have never slid onto the blade yet (and don't plan to either). After finding that my had does move some on the 710, it made me decide to use it as a utility piece rather than defensive per se. I've experience no danger of sliding onto the blade with the 806, again due to the finger cutout. Normally I carry a fixed blade for defense, and the 806 as backup, however some circumstances prohibit the fixed blade, so the 806 rides primary and the 710 backs it up. I used to have a pic of a 710 modified by someone to have more of a finger guard, it belonged to a friend of mine and was pretty cool, but didn't feel right in my hand. I'll post it for fun if I can find it again.

For EDC I like the 710 over the 806 simply because it's handle is shorter.

806's handle length (closed length) 5 1/2"
806's blade length: 3 7/8"

710's handle length (closed length) 5"
710's blade lenght: 3 15/16"

The difference in blade lenght is almost non-existent, but between my 710 and the 806 the 710 is about a 1/16 of an inch longer. So the 710 gives you just as much blade in a smaller package.

The 806 obviously has a more secure grip with it's finger cut out. The hole on the 806 doesn't do much for me. It's not as efficent as a Spyderco hole. I prefer the thumbstuds on the 710 over the hole on the 806.

I have also been happy with the M2 steel on the 710HS. It takes a really sharp edge.

unless you live in compton or south bronx, you're probably never going to face a situation where you need to stab someone to the bone and worry about your hand going onto the blade. that is, unless you think you're rambo. that being said, get the 710. it's much more useful for actual every day purposes

I dont know how many times you have been in the bronx but that is a stereotype.

I have lived here for 20 years and have never had a problem.

Did you know the bronx is rated 170X safer than that the average off al suburban or rural areas in any crimes.

Oh yeah NYC in general is 200X safer.

I would feel much safer living here in NYC and I do live in South bronx. Then living in a suburban or rural area.

You suburban whites doing 7x the amount of drugs that urban people do.

Murder
rape
suicide

oh yeah and school shooting.

Id want a 806 living in a suburban area.

and using a knife for defese means you are a pussy. Juste use ur hands. I would never ever use my knife.

Vinny again. He's not the sharpest knife in the drawer....

ayzianboy,
Only reason I'm concerned with hand slippage is from a bad experience with a Lightfoot LCC. I do a large amount of training with a knife on a weekly basis and while I've never had to stab someone, I do carry a knife either as a primary defense weapon or as backup to my sidearm, I guess I've come to look at the defensive aspect of a knife over the utility aspect more and more lately.

Well I got a chance to handle (fondle?) the 806 today. I have already handled the 710 many times and am familiar with its feel. I must say the 806 really does feel nice in the hand and I don't have large hands either. I handled one of the older ATS34 liner lock versions though so I hope I still got an accurate feel for what the 806D2 is like since that's what I'm ordering. I'm going to give the 806D2 a shot. I just ordered one from knifecenter.com with overnight shipping. If I can get it hair popping sharp and it is comfortable in the pocket even after a couple weeks of EDC then I'll say it's a keeper and let it replace my current EDC which is a Ritter Grip, otherwise there may still be a 710 in my future.

Got my 806D2 yesterday and I love it! If I could change anything on it the only thing I would do is make is S30V. :) But I'll take it as is and be happy. Only time will tell if is suits me for everyday carry, but so far so good.

Anyway the best knife between the 806 and 710 is definitely the 805..
