I have not experienced any rust problems. The only place that is exposed is the edge and I use Tuf cloth on it. The BT finish works even when it is scratched.
M2 takes one heck of a sharp edge. You can reprofile it to 15 degrees bevel and it cuts and cuts. I have not noticed problems with it chipping like their ATS-34 blades.
Use a diamond hone or you will be working it all day!
For a using blade, I really like coated M2. It does start looking bad after it gets all scratched up.
"It takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'" It works for me. It's well heat-treated M2 that is tough and holds a great edge. I would highly recommend it.
I have had less than favorable performance out of a Mini AFCK that I have in M2. It will chip pretty easily if sharpened to 17 deg. Had to resharpen to 20 deg. to stop it from having very small chips. If someone decides to trim a Ficus tree with the M2, you had better take care of the blade soon after or you will have a problem!!!!
On the other hand I've had excellent luck with my M2 mini AFCK. I used it hard for a couple of years now and have not noticed any chipping or inordinate corrosion. I do wipe it clean after use however. It is more difficult to sharpen than softer steels so I use a diamond hone most of the time.
