boar spear as a hiking staff?

so if you wanted a good double sided spearpoint blade to pack for lashing on a staff, what steel would you want, how thick of stock and heat treated how high? Relatively soft I take it, maybe 1055HC?

I would want...steel, or maybe (gasp) iron. Let's not overthink this. Our ancient brothers used Clovis points made of flint. Today, I could use a sharpened file, or screwdriver, or a piece of quickly fashioned rebar :D

When I was a kid living in The Philippines and Guam we would have a monthly pot luck with loads of families. The men and boys would go out with heavy nets and spears (some had good spears, but many just used bamboo cut at an angle) and hunt down a wild boar for the spit. It was a lot of fun, tasted amazing and made you feel all manly. All of us boys would also spear fish with short bamboo spears with a long metal single-barbed spike on it and we would hunt frogs with rubber bands and bamboo shish-kabob skewers. Those were great times!

I've toyed with the spear idea off and on over the years. The Bushman knives, Assegai and Boar spears from Cold Steel all have an attraction that conjures romantic images of primitive man surviving. The SOG Spirit looks like a decent compromise for weight and size for packing vs. utility. Lately I've been toying with this idea for the car and the Spirit is taking the lead because of size and weight. Cut a stick, put on the spear head and nail it on and you're ready to go. As far as a hiking staff goes, you may get harassed by rangers, police, etc. for being the mad man with the spear and if your state deems double edged blades are evil then you'll have others charges to deal with too. If you were to go with the staff then I think I would want a good kydex sheath for it too, and you definitely want the spear to be longer than you are tall for safety reasons.

Rick, did you make that spear? I feel all giddy just looking at it!

I think it would be a cool idea.In fact, I might have to make one up.Cold steel does make some pretty useful looking spearheads,I'd probably go that rout.

Heck, make it a Viking trio. A&A Viking spear, HI Seax, A&A axe. The A&A spear handles a lot better than the Cold Steel Boar spear. They also make a boar spear.

Maybe carry a spiked club and copper sheild and don't forget your loin cloth.

How about some input? Why do you think its a "very bad idea". Is a spear offensive to you, do you think they are useless, do you prefer your Walther or ejector seat...what is your reason for not liking them?

Here is how I carry mine while hiking.

Ted, that's an attractive combination! Makes me want to start wearing sandals :D

Lewis (of Lewis & Clark) carried a 'spontoon', basically a boar spear on his expedition across the US. It also doubled as a shooting stick. Good idea, tho' it may freak the sheeple.

TedWCA, you could make it an even more 'viking' viking trio by having a real Viking (Go talk to Christof at Koyote custom Knives!) make your seax instead of a Himalayan. Coldwood, I have no dobuts wrought iron could make a functional spearpoint, my main concern would be the point breaking, and I think one could hide a spear point under a cool leather sheath.

LOL, Christof lives very close to me and is making a custom knife for me now. I'm not really into seax knives, but I happened to get the HI version. I'm well aware of it's inaccuracies, but it is still a beast of a knife.

I bet! I've been looking at their daily listings and have a good pile of drool accumulating due to those Villagers and some of their smaller blades.
