I have seen spending some time around water lately, saltwater and brackish. I am looking for a small fixed blade or folder, around 3 inches, that will not rust or pit. I don't know much about these kinds of knives so I am open to suggestions.

Simple, anything in the spyderco salt line with H1, will not rust, no matter how hard you try

I use a small non-serrated MISSION titanium MPU for salt Water kayaking (and loads of other tasks).
Titanium is impervious to the elements.

I use any stainless knife, dunk and dry it with the rest of my kayaking gear. Oil every so often.

Prior to switching to a titanium MISSION, I used various SS knives for salt water kayaking.
I go kayaking A LOT and no matter the rinsing with fresh water, cleaning and oiling, eventually SS knives get rusty. Must be something in the local salt water ;-)
At least mine did and I took care/time to clean them religiously.
With titanium, thats not an issue at all. I just leave the knife in the rig/vest and rinse the vest with fresh water - mainly to make sure the vest lasts a few more years.
As I see, there is titanium, H1 and the Boye for salt water use.

Growing up i had several "stainless steel" knives that rusted up like a 1095 steel. Had a dive knife that turned into a throwing knife because I could not get it wet... go figure.

Alas, the mission and Boye are a bit out of my price range. How is the H-1 at holding an edge.

I use Spyderco H1 knives when saltwater kayaking/fishing and they perform well and are inexpensive. The 2 styles of fixed H1's I have, the Aqua Salt and the Caspian are discontinued but Spyderco recently released the Enuff fixed blade in H1. The H1 folders are great too. I'm generally not a big fan of serrations, but I recommend serrated H1 over plain edge H1.

The Boye knives look very nice.

If you're not a fan of the spyderco designs there is also the Benchmade 556H2O Griptilian. I am getting one next week. But in terms of being more practical on a boat, there is the Benchmad dive knife (111 or 110H2O???). Like some of the Spyderco Salt knives, it comes in a folder or fixed and has a more blunt tip which I find way better to have on a rocky boat. I also think the 110 comes with a rubbery handle for better grip when its wet or your hand is full of fish guts. Its probably the ugliewt knife out there but its about function, not looks right?

If it hasn't been said enough, Spyderco H1!

The Boye looks nice too, but Spyderco has more options.
