Hey Guys,

For a medium size BOB backpack under 5 pounds, what do you like?

What do you know about SnugPak's Rocket 70?

Thanks,

Geoff

Don't know a thing about the Snugpaks. Mine is my avatar. It's the German Mountain Rangers pack, or was. Basically a sack with 2 pockets that are side sewn, so long items like axe, etool, etc., can be carried. You can find them for under $30.00 usually and they are rugged and hold a fair amount of gear. Got no clue as to cubic inches, but probably under 2500.

I looked at the SnugPak Rocket when I was shopping for a backpack. I liked the side pouches. I called the HQ's in Florida and the warranty is only one year. If you search the internet, you may find the same unfavorable reviews I read concerning the packs durability. I compared the Rocket with a Blackhawk pack at a store and the quality appeared much better with the Blackhawk.

I've liked everything I've seen of Snugpak so far and have done pretty much since inception. I have my reservations about the pack though. Even if it is very well made indeed is what you are paying for exactly what you need. That pack is clearly pitched at the military and does that modular build a day pack from it by zipping pockets together thing that the issue PLCE does. In fact, a selling point is that they will attach to the issue yoke. All dandy I'm sure and probably a handy feature for your kit when you have strong environmental constraints, but hardly useful if base camp is home. I certainly can't recall a burning desire in daily living to dump the bulk of my bergan off somewhere under a hedge and go roaming, if only the side pockets zipped together. Then there's the size of it. At 70litres the market is awash with many great trekking / climbing packs that may be much better suited. Of special note here is that military packs are usually designed to carry when worn with webbing or at least some sort of belt order. Civilian packs don't usually require that and can concentrate on optimizing for the mater at hand.
