Bob Dozier custom knife--worth wait time?

I really like some of Dozier's designs and I've heard great things about his heat treat on D2 steel. I'd love to grab one but man I hate really long wait times lol. From what I've read, his wait time is about 1 year. Is it worth the wait in your opinion?

Thanks,
BN

Yes. I've got a dozier custom small folder in my pocket. I've owned it for years never sharpened it. It appears to have a factory edge I've never touched up and it's the sharpest knife I own. Did I mention it was made in 1998? And the f&f is excellent. Smooth as ice, centered blade, early lock up back from before early lock up was popular.

One year is not a long time to wait for a custom knife from one of the best known knifemakers in the world. And yes, I do think they are worth it.

I own several Dozier knives, both fixed and folders. In terms of ergonomics, fit, finish and edge holding, they are excellent. Unfortunately the wait time for the custom hand made fixed knives from Bob & Dan's shop is up now to three years, and they don't even take orders for Bob's folders, although they sell at shows and a few leak out from their website. Some of the custom vendors have Doziers available also. Vince from Ft. Henry and A.G.Russell can get you a taste. Since they're both on this forum I imagine a plug is OK. The Dozier 'Pro-Guide' is a high contender on my "if I could only have one fixed blade knife" list, and my small folding hunter is a constant companion. Their small fixed blade knives are very useful, and have great kydex sheaths for EDC. Dozier knives are great cutting tools, from the shop of one of the classic masters of the American hand-made knife industry. Hard to go wrong with that.

Well, no matter what, that year is gonna go by. You can either have one or not, and if you don't like it, you can sell it.

What was the question again?

Very good value in a Dozier knife! If you are going to order a custom, just make sure you get custom features or you could have bought a standard Dozier from a vendor that sells them. Choosing the model is the toughest part for me. :)

Vince at Fort Henry posts several doziers a month. He's a great guy to do business with too. You wont be disappointed with a Dozier!

Absolutely worth it.
My KS-7 Wilderness (CF/D2) is my baby and Bob's D2 has magical powers.

I'm considering getting one, myself. I like the Arkansas Toothpick, or New York Special, both which have the same blade shape. If you are fine with an off-the-shelf model, check out A. G. Russell's. I want a special grind on my knife, so that would entail the longer wait.

I have a ks1, wilderness and straight personal. Love them all. Don't hesitate, get one ordered now! Then you can order your second one.

For me the wait time is too long. But I have options. Bob always attends Blade in early June and usually brings around 100 knives to sell. AG Russell regularly sells Dozier blades, but they are more or less with standard handles/scales versus something less common. I bought a Wilderness Guides Knife from AG just prior to Christmas and I love this knife. I like it better than the Wilderness Knife mentioned above (have it too).

I tend to forget how many Doziers I own, but I believe it is 5 or 6. I almost always buy one of his knives at Blade in Atlanta if I attend. It is one of the reasons I try to go earlier. I head straight to his tables upon entering....

I'll probably get one from AG russel for the significantly shorter wait time lol. I fine with the standard models so its okay.

Would you guys recommend the personal utility or the slim outdoors man for basic edc tasks, some food prep, and occasionally feathersticking?

Either one. Which one do you like best.
BTW, I'll have my Dozier order, a Red K9, in one month. Time flies.

I like the overall look of the personal utility better but the blade seems on the shorter side. I would much prefer 3.5-4 inches. On another note, is the k-9 personal utility from the dozier website different than the personal utility from AG russel?

Last question lol:

Is the personal utility and slim outdoorsman from AG russel hollow ground or flat ground? I can't tell from the photos online but I much prefer that it be flat ground.

I have multiple Dozier knives, they are worth every penny. As for wait time, if you know what you want, try a second party knife seller, you would be surprised what you can find.

Worth the wait, yes, but if I were you I would keep an eye on the featured inventory section of his site, as well as his authorized dealers, as well as the forums. Chances are you'll find something close to what you are looking for well before a custom order would be ready for you. I picked up this cocobolo DK-FH recently.

I probably will just get a standard slim outdoorsman from AG russel. I REALLY would love a k36 bushcrafter though.

EDIT: Just expended funds on something I really wanted >.> but I definately will be watching the dozier dealers in this year and maybe snag something in the future months.

With the exception of the Bushcrafter's scandi grind, almost all Dozier knives are hollow ground. If you get into custom-land and are willing to wait, convex and flat ground knives can be ordered as special options. Some models of Dozier knives are made up in batches just for A.G.Russell's store, and they have subtle detail differences or special handle material runs. I have a straight personal that has an antique butterscotch amber yellow micarta handle with extra finger/palm scalloping at the bolster, no lanyard tube, and the maker's mark etched into the tang rivet. Its kinda cool and the color looks nothing like the picture in the Russell catalog. Also it should be mentioned that their kydex sheaths are some of the best in the industry and can be bought or changed at the Dozier shop with reasonable turn-around (about a month for 3 knives for me), and price. Good luck & enjoy!
