Bob Dozier folders - how good?

In my never-ending search for the ideal all-round pocket knife, I am now looking at a Dozier folder, either the large folding hunter or the TK-3 (although the latter is thin on the ground). I am drawn to Dozier because he seems to know how to sharpen a knife properly, which as someone who's sharpening skills falls somewhere in the narrow space between 'barely adequate' and 'laughable', is something I can really appreciate. Can I get some feedback from people who've owned Dozier folders? I think his rep has been built largely on his fixed blades...can he make a folder too? I'm not really interested in flippers so that narrows things down somewhat. What I want is a knife that is comfortable to carry, relatively simple to open and will cut out of the box! TIA...

Mark- Ask AG Russell what he thinks of the Dozier Folder.
Good gawd man, do u even have to ask? :D

Rolf I do have to ask, as I dont have buckets of cash lying around to continually throw at new knives in the hope that something will stick! Actually I shouldnt exaggerate. I do have more than a couple of great EDC folders but I am cursed with endless curiosity...

Yer just a knut like me.
I currently EDC the Bucklite 422. I think I found the one. And, it's Orange.

I've never owned a dozier, but I've shopped for them on the resale market at gun and knife shows. I thought I wanted one, but after seeing and handling three I changed my mind. They were good knives that were well made, but for a variety of ergonomic and asthetic reasons they did not trip my trigger. Price wise, they are not a bargain. I would recommend handling a few before committing. When it comes to "how good are they", they are excellent knives, just not for me.

He builds a very fine folder and pays attention to details!! I would suggest handling them to see if they trip your trigger!!

Thanks for the in-put chaps, unfortunately due to my location in the ass end of the world it is very difficult to just check em out without buying first. I'm fairly certain if I do end up getting one it may well be the only one in the country.

I had a Large Folding Hunter. It was well made and perfect in fit and finish. It locked up tight and made a pleasing “snick” when it locked up. There was No blade play and the blade was perfectly centered.

The pivot can’t be taken apart and cleaned etc.

It’s a large full sized knife with tip down carry and the pocket clip can’t be reversed. It’s probably thicker than a similar sized fixed blade. It filled the hand nicely and didn’t seem to have any hot spots- I only cut paper so didn’t verify that personally.

I sold mine because it was a full sized folder and I wanted a slimmer EDC to carry at work etc.

If you watch the For Sale Forum they don’t come up often but when they do they were available for about $475. They can be had new from Doziers website for $605:

Good Luck if it fits your needs you won’t be disappointed.

Dozier is my favorite maker and I've owned about a dozen if his folders. Personally the large size with 3.5" blade is my favorite. The way his folders are built, the medium with 3" blade us just too "fat" for me. I always feel like it is too thick for it's length. The large size to me is in great proportion. I have 3 of them that I use regularly. I carry one in the pocket with the clip and and also carry one in a belt sheath when hunting. With any dozier knife his knives act bigger than they are. Just about every year I dress an elk with my dozier large folder and it is up to the task. I'll say this- you will not be disappointed in the fit, finish, lockup, and most if all the sharpness of a dozier folder. If you don't mind a larger size you'll love this one. It is nice in the pocket on a clip because of the clip design it rides low in the pocket with not much of the knife sticking out above the clip. My opinion on handle material, stick with micarta or G10. Stag is too thick on these knives. I'm always in search of the perfect knife and in my opinion a micarta large dozier folder is the perfect larger folder.

Thank you sir, that's very useful.

Your input is much appreciated! I am def leaning towards the G-10 or micarta. G-10 is a personal favourite. I must say though I have seen some with mastodon ivory and stag handles that were staggeringly beautiful. Especially when matched with a damascus blade.

The large folding hunter in Cocobolo on Dozier's website tripped my trigger.

The only Dozier folder that I have ever been interested in is the DK-3 Utility Hunter/Tactical utility.....the other blade shapes do not do it for me at all.

That said at the price point, I feel there is simply so much more knife value and superior aesthetic available from makers like R.J. Martin, or J.W. Smith.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

The DK-3 is the best looking one I agree. Unfortunately it appears to be much scarcer than the large hunter. I have had a dalliance with an RJ Martin folder, however, I prefer non-flippers and that is all he is making these days. I have yet to try a John Smith.

R.J. told you that?

Pretty sure he can work in one or a few that are-non flippers, all it takes is patience.

Yup, pretty much. I dont think he's made a non-flipper in some time. I had a Q-36, it was a lovely knife but I couldn't get used to opening knives with my forefinger.

I've just bought a Dozier Large Titanium Folding hunter and it's a very strong knife with a good sharp D2 blade.
Just one point of regret, I'd better bought a smaller one because it's big, but smaller are very hard to find !
I certainly not regret my purchase.....
